Yesterday at Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Mission in Lilburn, Georgia, Peruvians gathered for the celebration of\u00a0El Se\u00f1or de los Milagros. \u00a0I celebrated Mass in a packed church at 4pm and it was followed by a procession.<\/div>\n

Ayer en la Misi\u00f3n Latinoamericana de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de las Am\u00e9ricas en Lilburn, Georgia, peruanos se reunieron para la celebraci\u00f3n del Se\u00f1or de Los Milagros. \u00a0Yo celebr\u00e9 la Misa con la iglesia llena a las 4pm y luego se continu<\/i>\u00f3<\/i>\u00a0con una procesi\u00f3n.<\/i><\/div>\n

The Lord of Miracles is a simple depiction of Christ crucified with his mother and Saint John standing at his side. \u00a0Above the cross descends the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove and farther above is a bearded God the Father blessing Christ and holding an orb. \u00a0The image was painted on the adobe wall of a storehouse in 1651 by an unknown Angolan slave. \u00a0In 1655 an earthquake shook Lima killing thousands and destroying much of the city. \u00a0The storehouse containing the image collapsed entirely except the wall with El Se\u00f1or de los Milagros.<\/p>\n

El Se\u00f1or de los Milagros es una simple representaci\u00f3n de Cristo crucificado con su madre y San Juan a su lado. \u00a0Sobre la cruz desciende el Esp\u00edritu Santo en forma de una paloma y m\u00e1s arriba a\u00fan est\u00e1 Dios Padre bendiciendo a Jes\u00fas y sosteniendo un orbe. \u00a0La imagen fue pintada en 1651 sobre una pared r\u00fastica de adobe por un desconocido esclavo angole\u00f1o. \u00a0En 1655 un terremoto mat\u00f3 a miles de lime\u00f1os y destruy\u00f3 gran parte de la ciudad. \u00a0El galp\u00f3n con la imagen se derrumb\u00f3 excepto la pared con El Se\u00f1or de los Milagros. \u00a0<\/i>

Soon miracles were reported to happen at the site so a small chapel was built. \u00a0In 1671 a Mass was celebrated at the chapel with the presence of the viceroy, the representative of the King of Spain in Peru. \u00a0An earthquake and tidal wave in 1687 destroyed the original chapel, yet the adobe wall remained intact. \u00a0A Church was built at the site, incorporating the adobe wall so Christ would be behind the high altar. \u00a0Since 1771 the care of Lima\u2019s most recognized religious icon has been entrusted to the Nazarene Sisters who live at the convent adjacent to the church.<\/div>\n

Pronto se reportaron milagros en ese lugar, as\u00ed que se edific\u00f3 una peque\u00f1a capilla. \u00a0En 1671 se celebr\u00f3 una Misa en la capilla en presencia del Virrey Pedro Antonio Fern\u00e1ndez de Castro. \u00a0Un terremoto y maremoto arrasaron \u00a0Lima en 1687 destruyendo la capilla, pero una vez mas la pared de adobe no se da\u00f1\u00f3. \u00a0Se construy\u00f3 una iglesia incorporando la pared para que as\u00ed El Se\u00f1or de los Milagros quedara detr\u00e1s del altar mayor. \u00a0Desde 1771 el cuidado de la imagen religiosa mas reconocida de Lima est\u00e1 encargado a las Madres Nazarenas, quienes viven en un convento adjunto a la iglesia.<\/i><\/p>\n

Confraternities of men and women throughout Peru organize processions at their local parishes. \u00a0Enormous processions take place in Lima on October 18, 19 and 28. \u00a0While in seminary, I had the honor to participate in Se\u00f1or de los Milagros processions at Saint Peter Square and Rome\u2019s cathedral, Saint John Lateran. \u00a0The Confraternity of El Se\u00f1or de los Milagros was organized in Atlanta in 1991 and for one more year has made present in Georgia this great Peruvian religious feast.<\/div>\n

Hermandades de hombres y mujeres por todo el Per\u00fa organizan procesiones en sus parroquias locales. Grandes procesiones se llevan a cabo en Lima el 18, 19 y 28 de octubre. \u00a0Mientras estudiaba en el seminario, tuve el privilegio de participar en procesiones del Se\u00f1or de los Milagros en la Bas\u00edlica de San Pedro y en la catedral de Roma, San Juan de Letr\u00e1n. \u00a0La Hermandad del Se\u00f1or de los Milagros en Atlanta se organiz\u00f3 en 1991 y una vez m\u00e1s este a\u00f1o ha hecho presente en Georgia esta gran fiesta religiosa.. \u00a0<\/i><\/div>\n
