{"id":2118,"date":"2016-12-23T13:59:24","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T18:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/?p=2118"},"modified":"2016-12-23T13:59:24","modified_gmt":"2016-12-23T18:59:24","slug":"catholic-lima-monasterio-de-san-francisco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2016\/12\/catholic-lima-monasterio-de-san-francisco.html","title":{"rendered":"Catholic Lima: Monasterio de San Francisco"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/10\/DSC07593-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2120\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2120 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/10\/DSC07593-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07593\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Monastery of San Francisco is one of the most visited sites in Lima by tourists and pilgrims. \u00a0It is the number one site to visit according to Trip Advisor. \u00a0Built in the late 17th century, both the church and monastery are gems of Spanish colonial architecture. \u00a0A victim of devastating earthquakes throughout the centuries, I find the monastery much more beautiful than the actual church.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2121\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2121\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2121 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/10\/DSC07594-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07594\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cloister of San Francisco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>San Francisco is best known for its extensive catacombs that create an elaborate underground labyrinth where an estimated 25,000 bodies are buried. \u00a0This\u00a0colonial burial ground was closed in the early 1800s when the above ground Presbitero Maestro Cemetery opened. \u00a0The catacombs also served as secret passageways connecting some of the city\u2019s most important buildings. \u00a0If you are claustrophobic, you want to wait for your group at the sacristy and admire the beautiful \u201cfamily tree\u201d of the Franciscan Order. \u00a0The underground passageways of the catacombs get very tight and the ceiling is low. \u00a0The air is musty.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2124\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2124\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2124 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/10\/DSC07607-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07607\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catacombs of San Francisco with bones neatly organized<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just a brief walk from the Cathedral of Lima and next to the Rimac River, there are now plenty of nice stores that line the street leading to San Francisco. \u00a0You can buy beautiful traditional artwork. \u00a0Make sure you visit the Bar Restaurant Cordano just one block from the church next to the Presidential Palace. \u00a0It is a well-kept, traditional bar of years past. \u00a0Stepping into Cordano is like going back over one hundred years in a time machine. \u00a0Across the street from Cordano, you can admire the beautiful old train station of Lima, Desamparados.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2123\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2123\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2123 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/10\/DSC07605-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07605\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sacristy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though San Francisco is a beautiful place, I will soon write about the Monastery of Saint Dominic.
