{"id":2325,"date":"2017-01-08T14:00:12","date_gmt":"2017-01-08T19:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/?p=2325"},"modified":"2017-01-08T14:00:12","modified_gmt":"2017-01-08T19:00:12","slug":"epiphany-an-encounter-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2017\/01\/epiphany-an-encounter-god.html","title":{"rendered":"Epiphany: An Encounter with God"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2326 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2017\/01\/IMG_5691-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5691\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><\/p>\n<p>I once heard a story about a parish priest who climbed up the church\u2019s steeple to be closer to God.\u00a0 He thought that by spending time up there, he would hear God\u2019s word more easily and then pass it on to his parishioners.<\/p>\n<p>But the more time he spent up there, the further from God he felt.\u00a0 One day, in desperation he cried out, \u201cGod, speak to me!\u00a0 Where are you?\u00a0 Show yourself!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that very moment the priest heard a voice com\u00a0\u00a0ing from below, not from above, saying \u201cMy son, here I am!\u00a0 Down here on earth among my people!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The priest was looking in the wrong place because he had not grasped the great mystery the Church celebrates every year at Christmas: that God has come down to dwell among us, He is Emmanuel.\u00a0 Some seek God on mountaintops while others search for Him in deserts. Others still go to the ends of the earth searching for Him, but these seekers end up frustrated like the priest from the story because their extreme searches yield no fulfilling results.\u00a0 God has come down to dwell among us and we do not have to travel to find Him.<\/p>\n<p>Three wise men did travel to honor Jesus, yet the bright star did not lead them to a majestic palace or lush realm.\u00a0 They encountered God where they least expected it: in a cold cave by the small town of Bethlehem.\u00a0 They found God in a humble baby born among the lowly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2327\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2327\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2017\/01\/IMG_5697-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5697\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shrine of the Three Kings, Cologne Cathedral, Germany<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>God has visited His people and has chosen to dwell among us.\u00a0 We can encounter Him here and now, so we are called to seek Him here and now.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus taught us that \u201cwhere two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them,\u201d and \u201cwhat you did for the least of my people, you did for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We know that through baptism God has come to dwell in us making us temples of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Wherever we go, we take Him with us.\u00a0 Every person we encounter is an encounter with the living God.<\/p>\n<p>Our search for God is fulfilled at every Eucharist where He reveals Himself in time and space, reminding us that He has chosen to dwell among us.\u00a0 He comes to feed us with heavenly food which strengthens His presence deep within our being.\u00a0 In the Eucharist God manifests Himself in the least expected manner as He did on Christmas morning.\u00a0 Ordinary bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ His Son.<\/p>\n<p>God has visited His people, He has chosen to dwell with us His creatures.\u00a0 The mystery celebrated at Christmas continues throughout the year for those who seek and find God here and now as they prepare for eternal life.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2328\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2328\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2328 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2017\/01\/IMG_5713-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5713\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cologne Cathedral, Germany, which for centuries has claimed to have the relics of the three wise men<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The pictures are mine, all rights reserved.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I once heard a story about a parish priest who climbed up the church\u2019s steeple to be closer to God.\u00a0 He thought that by spending time up there, he would hear God\u2019s word more easily and then pass it on to his parishioners.
