{"id":275,"date":"2013-03-19T13:23:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-19T13:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2013\/03\/pope-francis-homily-we-must-not-be-afraid-of-goodness.html"},"modified":"2013-03-19T13:23:00","modified_gmt":"2013-03-19T13:23:00","slug":"pope-francis-homily-we-must-not-be-afraid-of-goodness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2013\/03\/pope-francis-homily-we-must-not-be-afraid-of-goodness.html","title":{"rendered":"Pope Francis Homily: &#8220;We must not be afraid of goodness!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\">Pope Francis began the homily of his\u00a0inaugural\u00a0Mass with a reflection on the role of Saint Joseph as protector of the Virgin Mary, Jesus and the Church. \u00a0The Pope asked,<span style=\"color: #274e13\"> \u201cHow does Joseph exercise his role as protector? \u00a0He does so discreetly, humbly and silently, but with an unfailing presence and utter fidelity, even when he finds it hard to understand.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<p>The Pope continued by posing a second question, <span style=\"color: #274e13\">\u201cHow does Joseph respond to his calling to be the protector of Mary, Jesus and the Church? By being constantly attentive to God, open to the signs of God\u2019s presence and receptive to God\u2019s plans, and not simply to his own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After meditating on Saint Joseph, the Pope explored how Joseph\u2019s vocation and example of \u201cprotector\u201d is one for all humans, Christians and non-Christians alike. \u00a0This vocation <span style=\"color: #274e13\">\u201cmeans respecting each of God\u2019s creatures and respecting the environment in which we live. It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about. It means caring for one another in our families: husbands and wives first protect one another, and then, as parents, they care for their children, and children themselves, in time, protect their parents. It means building sincere friendships in which we protect one another in trust, respect, and goodness. In the end, everything has been entrusted to our protection, and all of us are responsible for it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He called those in positions of economic, political and social responsibility (plenty were present in official delegations at the Mass) to be protectors of creation, protectors of God\u2019s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #274e13\">\u201cBe warned of hatred, envy and pride which defile,\u201d<\/span> he said to them. \u00a0He encouraged to watch over emotions and our hearts because \u201cthey are the seat of good and evil intentions: intentions that build up and tear down!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the importance of tenderness which has already been evidenced by his actions and demeanor, he said,<span style=\"color: #274e13\"> \u201ctenderness is not the virtue of the weak, but rather a sign of strength of spirit and a capacity for concern, for compassion, for genuine openness to others, for love. We must not be afraid of goodness, of tenderness!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Pope\u2019s outlined his understanding of the role of his Petrine ministry stating,<span style=\"color: #274e13\"> \u201cLet us never forget that authentic power is service, and that the Pope too, when exercising power, must enter ever more fully into that service which has its radiant culmination on the Cross.
