The Pope\u2019s brief final words in Peru echoed his sentiments expressed in The Joy of the Gospel<\/em> regarding the need to reach out to those living in the margins of society, those \u201cnon-citizens\u201d who do not benefit from the goods of society.\u00a0 Noting the indifference found in cities towards those excluded from society, he warned that our cities can become a place of \u201cflight and distrust.\u00a0 A space for indifference that makes us anonymous and deaf toward others, transforming us into impersonal beings with cauterized hearts, and with this attitude we hurt society.\u201d<\/p>\n

He quoted his predecessor Pope Benedict stating, \u201cthe greatness of humanity is essentially determined by its relationship to the suffering of those who suffer.\u00a0 A society that does not embrace those who suffer is unable to express compassion towards them so that the suffering may be shared and endured; otherwise it becomes a cruel and inhumane society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peru is a country marked by a history of great suffering, poverty, and corruption.\u00a0 Though the lives of millions have improved in the past several years, there is still great pain in society.\u00a0 The Pope\u2019s visit has encouraged Peruvian society to dialogue and to seek unity.\u00a0 \u201cGuarden la esperanza,\u201d said Francis.\u00a0 \u201cKeep hope,\u201d words that could not be more applicable to Peruvian society today.<\/p>\n

He commended Peru for being a country of hope due to its rich traditions and customs which have marked the soul of its people.<\/p>\n

There is no doubt the Holy Father enjoyed his visit to Peru.\u00a0 His twitter account today reads, \u201cit has done me well to be with you.\u201d<\/p>\n
