{"id":285,"date":"2013-03-13T20:54:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-13T20:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2013\/03\/habemus-papam-and-yes-he-is-latin-american.html"},"modified":"2016-03-25T19:38:18","modified_gmt":"2016-03-26T00:38:18","slug":"habemus-papam-and-yes-he-is-latin-american","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2013\/03\/habemus-papam-and-yes-he-is-latin-american.html","title":{"rendered":"Habemus Papam &#8211; and yes, he is Latin American"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p>Five hundred years after the initial evangelization of South America (and a considerable portion of it done by members of the Society of Jesus), today the College of Cardinals has chosen the first Latin American Pope who also happens to be a member of the Society of Jesus. \u00a0This is a historic day.<\/p>\n<p>I could not contain my joy when I realized the Archbishop of Buenos Aires had been elected as the 266th\u00a0successor\u00a0of Saint Peter. \u00a0He is Latin American like me! \u00a0He is of an Italian background like me!<\/p>\n<p>With over 500 million\u00a0Catholics\u00a0hailing from Latin America despite the\u00a0continuous\u00a0exodus of Latin Americans from the Catholic Church in the past few decades, the election of Francis will have a tremendous impact on the Church in all of Latin America. \u00a0 Benedict XVI had already begun to focus on the importance of the Church in Latin America, primarily by inaugurating the fifth general conference of the bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean in May 2007 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since the resignation of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, I would joke that Benedict was chosen a few months before World Youth Day in Germany so we could expect the new Pope to be Brazilian, or at least Latin American. \u00a0The joke is now on me\u2026 it became a reality.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-cbSDGQRmAIs\/UUEaiYdC2gI\/AAAAAAAACWY\/yUbeB8CHRNI\/s1600\/pablo082008+020.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-cbSDGQRmAIs\/UUEaiYdC2gI\/AAAAAAAACWY\/yUbeB8CHRNI\/s320\/pablo082008+020.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Pope Francis\u2019 former cathedral in Buenos Aires (2008)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Xv-NHMurAB4\/UUEapn7frRI\/AAAAAAAACWg\/NR2R1tT0Ir0\/s1600\/pablo082008+025.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Xv-NHMurAB4\/UUEapn7frRI\/AAAAAAAACWg\/NR2R1tT0Ir0\/s320\/pablo082008+025.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>As if being the first Latin American and first Jesuit to become Pope was not enough, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio chose the name Francis making him the first Pope to bear that name. \u00a0In the near future, I am sure he will share a reflection as to why he chose the name. \u00a0Does he see himself as a reformer and builder of the Church like Saint Francis of Assisi?
