left;\">Today\u2019s station church is named after the fourth bishop of Rome, Saint Clement, who lived in the late first century. \u00a0Clement is well known for having written a letter to the church of Corinth replying to their request for guidance in resolving internal affairs. \u00a0In the letter Clement mentions the \u201csudden and successive calamitous events\u201d the church of Rome has lived, singling out the executions of Saints Peter and Paul. \u00a0Of interest also is his mention of Saint Paul traveling to the \u201cextreme limit of the west\u201d giving evidence of Paul\u2019s evangelization of the Iberian Peninsula.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">A clandestine house church was established at the present site of the Basilica of Saint Clement before the legalization of Christianity in the year AD 313. \u00a0This same house which had belonged to a Roman nobleman was converted into a basilica in the fourth century. \u00a0After the structure was badly damaged by the many invasions of Rome, the present basilica was\u00a0completed\u00a0in the twelfth century.<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/--dhBslhkBvg\/USmQYFHxbhI\/AAAAAAAACSw\/7IYAuHfilKo\/s1600\/IMG_0634.JPG\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/--dhBslhkBvg\/USmQYFHxbhI\/AAAAAAAACSw\/7IYAuHfilKo\/s320\/IMG_0634.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">The relics of Saint Clement, who died in exile in the East, were brought to Rome by the brothers Saints Cyril and Methodius in 867 and were subsequently enshrined at the basilica. \u00a0Since Saint Cyril died while in Rome, he was also\u00a0buried\u00a0at the basilica. \u00a0Also of great importance, the relics of the early second century martyr Saint Ignatius of Antioch are buried at the Basilica of Saint Clemente.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">The interior of the basilica harkens\u00a0back to Christianity at the height of the Middle Ages, containing a magnificent thirteenth century mosaic of paradise and a twelfth century marble choir that takes up the front one third of the nave. \u00a0Eighteenth\u00a0century excavations led by the Dominican Fathers who have been the keepers of the basilica for many years, revealed an ancient temple of the cult of Mithras below the basilica.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">The Basilica of Saint Clemente is an interesting and beautiful destination for those visiting Rome and it is conveniently located right between two city landmarks, the Colosseum and the Basilica of Saint John Lateran.<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-KiOsyGvbJjU\/USmQaq6Pi9I\/AAAAAAAACS4\/ivVs23ECfvM\/s1600\/IMG_0639.JPG\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img
