<\/a><\/div>\nOctober is unique in my native country of Peru, especially in the capital Lima. \u00a0Religious fervor increases, many people wear purple habits with thick white cinctures, processions take place and special foods are eaten. \u00a0These commemorate the patron of the city, El Se\u00f1or de Los Milagros (The Lord of Miracles), who since 1715 has been the official patron of Lima and since 2010 the Patron of Peru as proclaimed by ex-president Alan Garcia.<\/p>\n
The Lord of Miracles is a simple depiction of Christ crucified with his mother and Saint John standing at his side. \u00a0Above the cross descends the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove and farther above is a bearded God the Father blessing Christ and holding an orb. \u00a0The image was painted on the adobe wall of a storehouse in 1651 by an unknown Angolan slave. \u00a0In 1655 an earthquake shook Lima killing thousands and destroying much of the city. \u00a0The storehouse containing the image collapsed entirely except the wall with El Se\u00f1or de los Milagros.<\/p>\n
Soon miracles were reported to happen at the site so a small chapel was built. \u00a0In 1671 a Mass was celebrated at the chapel with the presence of the viceroy, the representative of the King of Spain in Peru. \u00a0An earthquake and tidal wave in 1687 destroyed the original chapel, yet the adobe wall remained intact. \u00a0A Church was built at the site, incorporating the adobe wall so Christ would be behind the high altar. \u00a0Since 1771 the care of Lima\u2019s most recognized religious icon has been entrusted to the Nazarene Sisters who live at the convent adjacent to the church.<\/p>\n
Throughout October processions take the official replica of El Se\u00f1or de Los Milagros throughout the city. \u00a0On October 18th, the mayor of Lima renders homage to Our Lord at the city\u2019s center square in the name of the nine million inhabitants of Lima.<\/p>\n
Confraternities of men and women throughout Peru organize processions at their local parishes. \u00a0While in seminary, I had the honor to participate in Se\u00f1or de los Milagros processions at Saint Peter Square and Rome\u2019s cathedral, Saint John Lateran. \u00a0The Confraternity in Atlanta visited my parish this past Sunday for Mass and a brief procession. \u00a0It was a very special moment for the community and especially for Peruvian parishioners. \u00a0A Mass and procession of El Se\u00f1or de los Milagros will take place on October 21st at the Latin American Mission of Our Lady of the Americas in Atlanta.<\/div>\n
