width=\"240\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Today is the feast of one of my favorite saints, Saint Ignatius of Loyola. \u00a0Member of a minor noble Basque family from Loiola, Spain, I\u00f1igo was born in 1491. \u00a0Trained as a soldier, he was seriously injured in 1521 at a battle in Pamplona. \u00a0As he lay in bed during his recovery, he read books\u00a0available\u00a0at his family home which included a book on the lives of the saints and one on the life of Christ.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-Zxp0XUpUrj4\/UBa8lX5PrBI\/AAAAAAAABC4\/Q4J7T7XgmfQ\/s1600\/IMG_5233.JPG\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Statue of Saint Ignatius returning home injured<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">As his leg healed, Ignatius experienced a deep conversion. \u00a0He decided to abandon his military career and travel to the Holy Land where he could be a soldier for Christ, but serving in the Holy Land ended up not being his call. \u00a0Ignatius returned to Europe and attended seminary in Paris. \u00a0There he gathered around himself six followers, among them Francis Xavier and Francis Borgia, and founded the Society of Jesus in 1534.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Ignatius became known for his <i>Spiritual Exercises<\/i>, a collection of prayers, suggestions for prayer and spiritual insights that has become a spiritual classic. \u00a0He traveled teaching the <i>Exercises<\/i>, sometimes getting in trouble with Church authorities who questioned the legitimacy of his spiritual masterwork.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Pope Pius III approved the Society of Jesus in 1540. \u00a0Its members, the Jesuits, quickly began to staff universities throughout Europe, to lead missionary expeditions to the ends of the earth and to preach moving spiritual retreats.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">In 1556 Ignatius died at his family home in Loiola. \u00a0The order has grown and flourished despite being\u00a0suppressed\u00a0by Rome from 1773 to 1814, mostly due to political pressure. \u00a0Today there are approximately 20,000 Jesuits, making it the largest male religious order of the Catholic Church.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-w_pNJO7kd7E\/UBa8o8aKh4I\/AAAAAAAABDY\/wOvwTj-zXlw\/s1600\/IMG_5268.JPG\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img
