Imagine you run into a high school buddy after many years and he asks you, \u201cwho did you marry?\u201d<\/p>\n

You answer, \u201cSusie, and I\u2019m so happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your buddy replies, \u201cThat\u2019s too bad, I really wish you had married Lola.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reply is very rude and inconsiderate! \u00a0It questions your choice while also questioning where you find happiness.<\/p>\n

The reply may seem odd and improbable, yet people, and many times faithful Catholics, say this to priests\u00a0occasionally.<\/p>\n

\u201cFather, I wish you could get married.\u201d<\/p>\n

Think about it.<\/p>\n

A priest is called and has chosen to live a celibate life for the glory of God. \u00a0He has chosen to live a celibate life to give himself entirely to Christ and His Church. \u00a0The priest has not chosen to live out his vocation haphazardly just as one does not choose a spouse\u00a0haphazardly. \u00a0To say to a priest who is living out his priesthood happily that you wish he could marry is like saying to a happily married friend you wish he had married someone else.<\/p>\n

I gave this example to a group of\u00a0eighth\u00a0graders several weeks ago, and they got it. \u00a0I remembered it today when yes, someone told me she wished I could get married. \u00a0I smiled, thanked her, and kept going.<\/p>\n
