Seems trivial?  It\u2019s very important, especially if you\u2019re Catholic!]<br><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">If I had a group of three brown and three red m&amp;ms;, would you say I have many m&amp;ms;?<span> <\/span>Probably not.<span> <\/span>You would say I have a few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">If I had a group of 1000 brown and three red m&amp;ms;, would you say I have many m&amp;ms;?<span> <\/span>You would probably say yes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">I would not be able to say \u2018I have many red m&amp;ms;,\u2019 but I could certainly state \u2018I have many brown ones.\u201d<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">Suppose I eat the three red m&amp;ms.;<span> <\/span>Is the statement \u2018I have many brown m&amp;ms;\u2019 still true?<span> <\/span>It certainly is.<span> <\/span><i>Many<\/i> is used as a quantity that includes all the members of the group.<span> <\/span>It represents <i>all<\/i> the brown m&amp;ms.;<span> <\/span>By saying \u2018I have many brown m&amp;ms;\u2019 I am speaking of <i>all<\/i> the m&amp;ms; I possess without excluding any.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">If I say, \u2018there were lots of people at the concert last night\u2019 I could easily say instead, \u2018there were many people at the concert last night.\u2019<span> <\/span>Using the word <i>many<\/i> does not exclude anyone who attended the concert.<span> <\/span>It describes a group with a large quantity of members.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">The following statement makes perfect sense and uses the word many to include all members of a group: \u2018Every single person I invited came to the reception.<span> <\/span>Many people were present.\u2019<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">It is now established that the word <i>many<\/i> may be used to refer to every member of a sizeable group without assuming the exclusion of any members.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">The following statement also makes sense: \u2018Many of the customers who bought the new product were under thirty.\u201d<span> <\/span>In this case, <i>many<\/i> is used in a manner that assumes division in the group.<span> <\/span>Many were under thirty, but other members of the group were over thirty.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">This last example shows the flexibility of the word <i>many<\/i>.<span> <\/span>At times it is used as a quantity that does not exclude or divine groups, but other times it is used in a manner that divides a group.<span> <\/span>It is not automatically a word that infers division and exclusion, even though it can accomplish that also.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">Therefore, the word <i>many<\/i> serves two functions in language.<span> <\/span>It can refer to a complete sizeable quantity and it can refer to a large quantity in comparison to another quantity.<span> <\/span>The first one is inclusive, the second exclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">The words of consecration with the upcoming new translation of the Roman Missal will state (following the words of Jesus in Matthew 26):<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\" class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">AKE THIS<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">ALL OF YOU<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">AND DRINK FROM IT<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">, <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\" class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY <\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">B<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">LOOD<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">, <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\" class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">THE <\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">B<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">LOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">, <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\" class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: georgia\" class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">D<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">O THIS IN MEMORY OF ME<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\"><span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">The blood of the eternal covenant will be poured out for you and for many.<span> <\/span>Is the use of the word <i>many<\/i> here inclusive of all members of a group or is it exclusive?<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">The word <i>many<\/i> is used to denote a very large number of people that can possibly be so large that it includes every single human being in the world: all people.<span> <\/span>The six billion inhabitants of our planet can be described as \u2018lots of people\u2019 \u2018all people\u2019 \u2018many people.\u2019<span> <\/span>The billions of human beings who have lived before us can also be described as \u2018many people.\u2019<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">The meaning of the words in the new translation is the same as in the old, \u201cIt will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven.\u201d<span> <\/span>The use of the word <i>many<\/i> in the new translation is not exclusive, but rather inclusive, including all human beings that have lived, live and will live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal;font-family: georgia\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;line-height: normal\"><span style='font-family:\";font-size:14pt'><span style=\"font-size:100%\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">The phrase \u201cfor you and for many\u201d does not mean only a limited, exclusive number of people benefit from the pouring out of Christ\u2019s blood.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia;font-size:100%\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">It means that a very large quantity of people benefit, all of humanity.<\/span><\/span><span>
