El 15 de febrero fue televisado un video de Libia que muestra la decapitaci\u00f3n de veinti\u00fan egipcios cristianos vestidos de anaranjado. Los asesinos llaman a los hombres \u201cgente de la Cruz\u201d y juran conquistar Roma. Se le oye decir a uno de los hombres cristianos antes de su decapitaci\u00f3n, \u201cJes\u00fas, ay\u00fadame\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n

El martirio es la forma definitiva para dar testimonio de la fe. De hecho, la palabra m\u00e1rtir viene de la palabra griega martus que significa \u201ctestimonio\u201d. Desde los primeros d\u00edas del cristianismo, la iglesia ha considerado a los hombres y mujeres que mueren por su fe como perfectos imitadores de Cristo al haber perdido sus vidas a causa del evangelio. Despu\u00e9s de los m\u00e1rtires, los confesores se reconoc\u00edan con mucho estima, aquellos que hab\u00edan sufrido persecuci\u00f3n y tortura por la fe, pero no hab\u00edan sido asesinados. Un ejemplo es M\u00e1ximo el Confesor quien vivi\u00f3 en el siglo VII y perdi\u00f3 su lengua por no dejar de ense\u00f1ar la fe.<\/div>\n

La iglesia comprende que el martirio es una gracia recibida y que no todo cristiano tendr\u00e1 la fuerza necesaria para soportarlo. \u00a0Por ejemplo, durante la persecuci\u00f3n del emperador Decio en el a\u00f1o 249 despu\u00e9s de Cristo, muchos cristianos a trav\u00e9s del imperio romano murieron como m\u00e1rtires, pero un n\u00famero considerable ofreci\u00f3 sacrificios a las deidades romanas con el fin de evitar la muerte. Una vez que la persecuci\u00f3n termin\u00f3 quienes hab\u00edan negado que Cristo solicitaron reingreso a la iglesia y las autoridades eclesi\u00e1sticas no sab\u00edan c\u00f3mo proceder. Algunos sugirieron rebautizarlos puesto que hab\u00edan rechazado a Cristo de manera tan definitiva, mientras que otros no quer\u00edan que sean readmitidos. \u00a0Los confesores especialmente sent\u00edan que quienes hab\u00edan negado a Cristo hab\u00edan tomado el camino f\u00e1cil durante la persecuci\u00f3n ofreciendo sacrificios mientras que ellos hab\u00edan perseverado en la fe. El obispo de Cartago en \u00c1frica, Cipriano, permiti\u00f3 que quienes hab\u00edan ofrecido sacrificios a los dioses romanos podr\u00edan ser aceptados nuevamente en la iglesia como penitentes, pero no podr\u00edan ser readmitidos oficialmente en la iglesia hasta su lecho de muerte. Los sacerdotes que hab\u00edan negado a Cristo no podr\u00edan retomar sus responsabilidades anteriores.<\/div>\n

Santo Tom\u00e1s de Aquino escribi\u00f3 que la virtud de la fortaleza permite que una persona se mantenga firme contra y soportar las dificultades de la vida permaneciendo firme en la b\u00fasqueda del bien. \u00a0La fortaleza es la virtud por el cual una persona puede superar debilidad, resistir la tentaci\u00f3n y hacer un sacrificio para lograr el bien. Tener fortaleza no elimina el miedo, sino por el contrario, permite a la persona perseverar en hacer el bien a pesar del miedo que \u00e9l o ella siente. Santo Tom\u00e1s escribi\u00f3 que el martirio es el acto principal de la fortaleza, o la manera de ejercer m\u00e1s perfectamente esta virtud. \u00a0El martirio requiere mantenerse firme en la verdad y la justicia, y contra la persecuci\u00f3n a pesar del temor por el mayor bien posible, Jesucristo.<\/div>\n

Los veinti\u00fan cristianos martirizados en Libia junto con los miles de hombres y mujeres que mueren cada a\u00f1o en el mundo a causa de su fe son perfectos ejemplos de fortaleza para todo cristiano. Su testimonio anima a la Iglesia record\u00e1ndonos a todos los fieles que vale la pena morir por el evangelio de Jesucristo. Los m\u00e1rtires se han mantenido firmes contra las mayores dificultades, han perdido sus vidas a pesar de sus temores y por la gracia de Dios han perseverado.\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
