Two years ago Lent began with a historic surprise. \u00a0As I got ready to begin the day on February 11th, 2013, I was listening to the radio as I always do. \u00a0The reporter that morning seemed to make little sense. \u00a0I assumed I had misunderstood since I had been shaving. \u00a0I paused my morning routine and stared at the radio to fine tune my hearing. \u00a0I could not believe what I heard, Pope Benedict XVI had resigned.<\/p>\n

I immediately recalled the last time a Pope resigned, it had been seven hundred years ago. \u00a0The hermit Pope Celestine V resigned under very questionable circumstances in the late 13th century. \u00a0The cardinal who suggested it and then encouraged him to retire became his successor, the troublesome Boniface VIII who died as a prisoner of the king of France. \u00a0On April 28th, 2009, while visiting the Italian province of l\u2019Aquila, Pope Benedict visited the tomb of Pope Celestine V and left as a gift his pallium. \u00a0Many have wondered in retrospect if Benedict was already considering retirement at that time, hence this unexpected gesture of leaving his pallium at the tomb of the retired Pope. \u00a0In his announcement he affirmed that he retired because \u201cmy strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.<\/p>\n

Not long after the retirement, the church was once again surprised by the election of a Latin American Jesuit who took the name of Francis. \u00a0At first the press insisted in creating friction between the two men, forgetting that as innovative as Francis seemed, Benedict had been the true innovator. \u00a0If it was not for Benedict\u2019s bold move which broke away from tradition, Francis would have not become Pope at that precise moment in history.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ever since his first appearance at the loggia of Saint Peter Basilica, the whole world has been captivated by Pope Francis. \u00a0Father John O\u2019Malley, SJ, professor at Georgetown, recently stated that the program of Francis\u2019 papacy can be summarized with two citations from the Second Vatican Council. \u00a0When he opened the council on October 11th, 1962, Saint John XXIII proclaimed that \u201cthe Catholic Church desires to show herself to be the loving mother of all, benign, patient, full of mercy and goodness.\u201d \u00a0One week later the bishops issued a Message to Humanity stating, \u201cwe carry in our hearts the hardships, the bodily and mental distress, the sorrows, longings, and hopes of all the peoples entrusted to us\u2026 Hence, let our concern swiftly focus first of all on those who are especially lowly, poor, and weak. \u00a0Like Christ, we would have pity on the multitude weighed down with hunger, misery, and lack of knowledge. \u00a0We want to fix a steady gaze on those who still lack the opportune help to achieve a way of life worthy of human beings.\u201d<\/div>\n

Pope Francis may not quote the Second Vatican Council as often as his predecessors, nor speak as eloquently and precisely as them, yet in his informal and colloquial manner, he radiates and practices the hopes of the Second Vatican Council. \u00a0Francis is a man who offers mankind hope grounded in Christ, not just wishful thinking. \u00a0This is hope that dissipates fear and leads to concrete action. \u00a0This man of contagious hope and joy is inspiring millions of Catholics and non-Catholics alike, reminding the world that the message of the Gospel is relevant and applicable in these modern times.<\/p>\n
