{"id":95,"date":"2014-11-05T22:02:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T22:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2014\/11\/francis-on-priestly-vocation.html"},"modified":"2014-11-05T22:02:00","modified_gmt":"2014-11-05T22:02:00","slug":"francis-on-priestly-vocation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2014\/11\/francis-on-priestly-vocation.html","title":{"rendered":"Francis on Priestly Vocation"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<p>Recently the bishop of San Bernardo in Chile asked Pope Francis, \u201cwhat would you say to a young person who at this moment feels a vocation to the priesthood or religious life?\u201d \u00a0The Pope\u2019s answer was simple, \u201cthat he allow himself to be gazed at by Jesus. \u00a0Jesus is the one who calls, not the priest, nor the bishop or the Pope. \u00a0It is Jesus who gazes at him with love, who shows him the people, who shows him the needs of the people of God and says, \u2018if you wish, come help.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bishop followed his initial question by asking, \u201cwhat would you say to a young man, who sensing a vocation, fails to take a step or has a hard time doing so due to fear?\u201d \u00a0Francis recalled the rich young man who had all the necessary virtues but walked away leaving Jesus sad. \u00a0\u201cI would say,\u201d Francis continued, \u201cif you do not follow him, you are free to do so; but look at the sadness you cause in the heart of the Lord, and the sadness you cause in so many hearts who will be unable to resolve their problems because they lack a priest.\u201d \u00a0Speaking candidly, he concluded that a man who is fearful \u201cshould not be silly. \u00a0When the Lord takes your hand, he never leaves you alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Pope\u2019s words come to us in time for the observance next week of National Vocation Awareness Week. \u00a0This is an annual week-long celebration of the Church in the United States dedicated to the promotion of vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life. <\/p>\n<p>As Francis expressed in his words, the vocation of a priest, deacon or religious is a response to a unique invitation from Jesus. \u00a0The word vocation itself comes from the Latin word vocare which means \u201cto call.\u201d \u00a0Every baptized Christian is called by Jesus to follow Him in a unique way, and those who are called to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life are called to a unique life of service in the Church. <\/p>\n<p>The Second Vatican Council stressed that the duty of fostering vocations to the priesthood falls on the whole Christian community, the greatest contribution being made by families that live out their Christian faith. \u00a0The Decree on the Training of Priests describes the family as the \u201cfirst seminary\u201d since there young men learn faith, charity and piety. \u00a0Faithful Christian families where children experience God\u2019s love are fertile ground for vocations to the priesthood. \u00a0Of course parishes, priests and bishops do much to encourage vocations to the priesthood, yet discipleship begins at home.<br>This upcoming week provides a time for reflection where the Church invites every Catholic to take time to pray for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life. \u00a0It\u2019s a week to educate others about the uniqueness of these vocations in the life of the Church, and most importantly to reflect on our own vocation by strengthening our relationship with Christ. <\/p>\n<p>Jesus never ceases to call priests, deacons and religious for His Church. \u00a0Could he be calling you?<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently the bishop of San Bernardo in Chile asked Pope Francis, \u201cwhat would you say to a young person who at this moment feels a vocation to the priesthood or religious life?\u201d \u00a0The Pope\u2019s answer was simple, \u201cthat he allow himself to be gazed at by Jesus. \u00a0Jesus is the one who calls, not the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2533,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-95","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
