Last night the Galeon Andalusia <\/i>docked in Savannah. \u00a0It\u2019s a 2010 faithful wooden reproduction of a 16th century Spanish galleon. \u00a0Galleons were built by the Spanish to be ocean-going merchant ships carrying cargo between Europe, the Americas and the Philippines. \u00a0Prone to attacks by pirates, every galleon was armed with cannons for protection.<\/div>\n

The ticket to go on board was a bit expensive, but I enjoyed looking around the galleon. \u00a0I imagined the cargo hold filled with gold and silver traveling from Peru to Spain. \u00a0The exhibit room told the story of the Spanish colonists who founded Saint Augustine, Florida in 1565 led by Pedro Menendez de Aviles, the first governor of La Florida<\/i>.<\/div>\n

The Nao Victoria Foundation of Spain is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the galleon. \u00a0It now travels around the world bringing history alive as this impressive galleon visits port after port.<\/p>\n
