In his book on\u00a0Gregory of Nazianzus on the Trinity and the Knowledge of God: In Your Light We Shall See Light<\/a>, Christopher Beeley takes a chapter to describe the Trinitarian foundations of Gregory\u2019s theology of pastoral care.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gregory\u2019s Orations, he points out, are organized to lay the emphasis on the priesthood: \u201cThe extant collection of Gregory\u2019s forty-four orations begins with three
\norations (1\u20133) on Christian leadership and the doctrine of the Trinity from the
\nyear 362, to which we could add Oration 6 on the same subject, delivered two
\nyears later. If we couple these early works with his many poetic verses on the
\nepiscopate and numerous other references to the ministry throughout his
\ncareer, then the administration of the Trinity by the pastoral leaders of the
\nChurch makes up the predominant context and is arguably the overarching\u00a0subject of Gregory\u2019s work as a whole\u201d (236-7).<\/p>\n

Though he describes pastoral care as a techne<\/em>, he doesn\u2019t think it\u2019s simply a product of human skill. Rather, the whole of the economy of redemption comes to its fulfillment in the pastoral cure of souls. It is the intention of the law, the prophets, the incarnation, Christ\u2019s death and resurrection. All the events of the covenant history are a \u201ctraining\u201d (paidagogia<\/em>) and \u201chealing\u201d (iatreia<\/em>) of the old man. And, he adds, \u201cOf this healing we who
\nare set over others are the ministers and fellow-laborers\u201d (239).<\/p>\n

Beeley glosses: \u201cthe whole of God\u2019s saving work\u2014from the Law and the prophets
\nto Christ\u2019s incarnation, passion, and resurrection\u2014\u2018\u2018intends\u2019\u2019 the pastoral
\nministry of the Church. Standing between Christ\u2019s first and second coming,
\npastoral ministry is both the direct consequence and the intended goal of
\nGod\u2019s saving work throughout history, even as it prepares creation for the
\nlast judgment and the life to come. Just as the New Covenant fulfills and is the
\nend of the Old Covenant, so the life of the contemporary Church, guided by its
\npastors, fulfills and is the end of both\u201d (239).<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
