Douglas Campbell (Deliverance of God<\/a>, 640-656) solves a number of issues at a stroke with his complex, layered explanation of Paul\u2019s use of hilasterion <\/em>in Romans 3:25.<\/p>\n

The word is used most commonly in the LXX to refer to the \u201cmercy seat\u201d above the ark, especially in connection with the Day of Atonement. So to say that God presented Jesus publicly as a hilasterion <\/em>is to say that His death is the definitive Yom Kippur.<\/p>\n

This is set, Campbell argues, in a larger \u201cmartyrological narrative.\u201d 4 Maccabees 17 is especially important, since it is the only other extant text where hilasterion <\/em>is used to refer to an atoning death, rather than to an object. To say God put Jesus forward as a hilasterion <\/em>thus implies also that it is Jesus\u2019 martyrdom <\/em>in particular that atones.<\/p>\n

And behind this, further, is the Aqedah, the \u201cbinding of Isaac,\u201d Abraham\u2019s near-sacrifice of his beloved son. That event took place at Mount Moriah, the temple mount, the very place where the High Priest sprinkled blood on the hilasterion <\/em>on Yom Kippur. Jesus\u2019s death atones as He is the greater Seed of Abraham, offered as an atonement.<\/p>\n

One of the important implications here is that Jesus\u2019 death, like Isaac\u2019s, is the founding \u201csacrifice\u201d of a cultic order. Isaac \u201cdied and rose\u201d on Moriah, and the Aqedah was reenacted every time a \u201cson of the herd\u201d was brought to the temple, and especially with the complex rites of the day of atonement. As Isaac\u2019s \u201csacrifice\u201d founded a provisional cultic order, so Jesus\u2019s full sacrifice founds the climactic cultic order at the end of the ages.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
