In a study of Barth and Hegel on liberation and atonement (Christ Crucified in a Suffering World<\/a>), Nathan Hieb notes that Barth defends the traditional ascription of iustitia distributiva<\/em> to God, the justice \u201cby which God distinguishes between right and wrong human action and on this basis approves or condemns\u201d (68).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hieb elaborates, \u201cAlthough Barth maintains that God\u2019s righteousness is \u2018essentially\u2019 God\u2019s mercy revealed through the love and grace of Jesus Christ, he also claims that the righteousness revealed in Christ entails the condemnation and punishment of sin without detracting from its character as mercy.\u201d It\u2019s not just in the Old testament that we see the \u201cpunishing operation of His righteousness,\u201d but also \u201cthe New testament includes many references to God\u2019s judgment against sin, a judgment that the Christian may only escape through the repentance of faith that receives Christ\u2019s righteousness as her own\u201d (69).<\/p>\n

Nor is distributive righteousness peripheral to the church\u2019s gospel message: \u201cWith unsettling, even shocking words, Barth writes that \u2018we must see, feel and appreciate [God\u2019s] love to us even in his anger, condemnation and punishment.\u2019\u201d God\u2019s mercy revealed in the gospel isn\u2019t mere \u201camnesty,\u201d but accords with God\u2019s law and God\u2019s wrath against sin. Without that wrath, Barth implies, we cannot really preach the gospel at all (69-70).<\/p>\n
