Consider Hamlet as model for Prufrock: <\/p>\n<p> Zulfikar Ghose says the \u201cI am not Hamlet\u201d in Eliot\u2019s Prufrock may be literal or ironic, but then adds: \u201cthe more one ponders the language of \u2018Prufrock\u2019 and of Hamlet the more one observes a striking convergence of thought.  In the end of \u2018Prufrock,\u2019 the mind, having failed to perceive the vision it has sought, invents one for itself; and to have heard mermaids singing is to have experienced a madness tha may or may not have been feigned; the mind, unable to arrive at philosophical truth, turns to the world of pure fiction to see if reality may not be discovered through the formulations of fiction. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cAs does Hamlet: \u2018Enter the Players.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <br> Martin Scofield muses along the following lines: \u201cwhat did Prufrock think Hamlet was?  One who did \u2018murder\u2019 (if not \u2018create\u2019)?  One who did \u2018disturb the Universe\u2019? Certainly one who had time for \u2018a hundred indecisions\/And for a hundred visions and revisions.\u2019\u201d  Hamlet certainly rolls the universe up into the \u201coverwhelming question\u201d of \u201cTo be or not to be.\u201d  For Prufrock, Hamlet is the hero, but as Scofield points out \u201cHamlet himself has Prufrockian moments,\u201d moments when his greatness flickered, when he wept and prayed, when he played the fool, when he longed to be a pair of ragged claws scuttling beneath the sea.  For Eliot, Hamlet was \u201ca particularly interesting romantic hero because his heroism seems to tend towards something very different, a Prufrockian lack of belief in himself.  He is the romantic hero on the verge of becoming something else . . .  . In rejecting an identification with Hamlet, Prufrock is still thinking in romantic and heroic terms . . .  . The poem is Eliot\u2019s critique of the vestiges of literary romanticism in a modern mind, and he turns to Hamlet for an aptly ambiguous symbol of that romanticism.\u201d   <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The influence of Hamlet, the play and the character, on modern literature is vast.
