In his recent book on\u00a0Bonhoeffer\u2019s Seminary Vision<\/a>, Paul House notes that Bonhoeffer insists (in\u00a0 Cost of Discipleship<\/a>) that we cannot pit Jesus against Paul. One of the key continuities between the two is baptism. Bonhoeffer writes, \u201cWhere the Synoptic Gospels speak of Christ calling men and their following him, St. Paul speaks of Baptism<\/em>\u201d (quoted by House, 80-81).<\/p>\n

House elaborates: \u201cBaptism is god\u2019s gift to believers. They receive baptism in an essentially passive manner; they surrender to Jesus and are baptized . . . . Baptism creates a breach between the believer and the world, and this breach is complete, for the \u2018baptized Christian has ceased to belong to the world and is no longer its slave. He belongs to Christ alone, and his relationship to the world is mediated through him\u2019\u201d (81).<\/p>\n

According to Bonhoeffer, \u201cBaptism also indicates \u2018justification from sin. the sinner must die that he may be delivered from his sin.\u2019 . . . This death, forgiveness and justification occur because \u2018the gift of baptism is the Holy Spirit\u2019\u201d (81). Though baptism is \u201cpassively received\u201d it gives the Spirit which will not allow the believer to live passively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just as Jesus\u2019 call brought disciples out into the open as Jesus disciples, so baptism \u201cprovides a visible response to Christ\u2019s call.\u201d Like Jesus\u2019 call, baptism summons the disciple to leave \u201cthe world, his work and his family, taking his stand visible in the fellowship of Jesus Christ\u201d (81, Bonhoeffer\u2019s words). But those who lose the world through baptism also gain it; the disciple \u201crecovers what he has surrendered \u2013 brothers, sisters, houses, and fields. Those who have been baptized live in the visible community of Christ\u201d (81, again Bonhoeffer).<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
