T<\/span>he ark has been placed in the temple, the Levitical musicians have played, Yahweh\u2019s glory has descended to fill the house, and then\u00a0Solomon start talking.\u00a0He declares the completion of the building (2 Chronicles 6:1\u20132), blesses Yahweh for fulfilling His promise (6:3\u201311), asks Yahweh to hear prayers (6:14\u201321), and then prays a series of seven petitions asking Yahweh to hear prayers offered in specific circumstances (6:22\u201342).<\/p>\n The blessing to Yahweh (6:4\u201311) is complexly, repetitively structured. On the surface, it has a general chiastic structure:<\/p>\n A. Yahweh spoke with mouth, fulfilled with hands, 6:4<\/p>\n B. Yahweh chose Jerusalem and David, 6:5-6<\/p>\n B\u2019. Yahweh selected Solomon to build a house, 6:7-9<\/p>\n A\u2019. Yahweh has fulfilled His word, 6:10-11<\/p>\n But this smooth outline obscures the texture of the text. It is dense with repeated formulaic phrases. David is never simply \u201cDavid\u201d but \u201cmy father David\u201d (vv. 4, 7, 8, 10). Israel is not \u201cIsrael\u201d or \u201cmy people\u201d but \u201cmy people Israel\u201d (vv. 5, 6). Yahweh is \u201cYahweh,\u00a0Elohim of Israel\u201d (vv. 4, 7, 10). The temple is not \u201chouse\u201d but \u201chouse for My name\u201d (vv. 5, 7, 8, 9, 10).<\/p>\n With these repetitions, the passage has a zig-zagging quality. The A section is broken up as follows:<\/p>\n 1. Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel<\/p>\n 2. who spoke to my father David<\/p>\n 3. and has fulfilled it with his hands.<\/p>\n B is even more complex:<\/p>\n 1. I did not choose a city<\/p>\n 2. from the tribes of Israel<\/p>\n 3. in which to build a house for My name.<\/p>\n 1\u2032. I did not chose\u00a0<\/p>\n 2\u2032. any man<\/p>\n 3\u2032. as leader over my people Israel.<\/p>\n 1\u201d. But I have chosen Jerusalem<\/p>\n 3\u201d. that my name might be there.<\/p>\n 1\u201d\u2019. I have chosen David<\/p>\n 3\u201d\u2019. Over my people Israel.<\/p>\n B\u2019 likewise fragments into short, repetitive phrases:<\/p>\n 1. It was in the heart<\/p>\n 2. of David my father<\/p>\n 3. to build a house for the name of Yahweh.<\/p>\n 1\u2032.\u00a0Yahweh said: Because it was in your heart<\/p>\n 3\u2032. to build a house for my name,<\/p>\n 1\u201d. You did well that it was in your heart<\/p>\n 3\u201d. But you shall not build the house<\/p>\n 3\u201d\u2019. your son will build a house for My name.<\/p>\n A\u2019 returns to the \u201cfulfillment\u201d theme of A, but it also gathers up the contents of B\/B\u2019 to form a concluding statement:<\/p>\n 1. Yahweh fulfilled the word He spoke:<\/p>\n 2. I have risen in place of my father David and sit on the throne<\/p>\n 3. and I have built the house for the name of Yahweh.<\/p>\n Verse 11 stands outside this structure.\u00a0It leaves behind the repetitive phrases and returns to vocabulary that was used in chapter 5\u2014ark and covenant.
