{"id":2853,"date":"2007-03-17T12:10:25","date_gmt":"2007-03-17T12:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leithart.level2d.com\/?p=2853"},"modified":"2017-09-06T23:50:41","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T17:50:41","slug":"violence-and-the-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/leithart\/2007\/03\/violence-and-the-good\/","title":{"rendered":"Violence and the good"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\">\n<\/head><body><p><\/p><p> In an interview in the March 17 issue of  <em> World <\/em> , Duke\u2019s  <em> theologien provocateur <\/em>  Stanley Hauerwas expresses sympathy for the view that killing to protect the innocent is allowable, but refuses to let his sympathy budge him from his pacifist convictions. <\/p>\n<p> It is never right to kill \u201cto prevent another from being killed.\u201d  If this puts him in uncomfortable position, it\u2019s one he\u2019s williing to accept: \u201cChristian nonviolence is a harsh and dreadful love requiring at times we may have to watch the innocent suffer for our convictions.\u201d  Apparently, sympathy for actual victims doesn\u2019t budge Hauerwas either. <\/p>\n<p> Hauerwas wants to protect the innocent if he can, only he doesn\u2019t want to do it violently.  Overcome evil with good, Paul says, and the pacifist leaps to the conclusion that Christians are prohibited from mounting violent resistance in any circumstances. <\/p>\n<p> That assumes, however, an indefensible equation of violence with evil.  Violence comes in such varied shapes, sizes, and contexts that it cannot be classed as one thing.
