{"id":387,"date":"2004-01-04T21:46:19","date_gmt":"2004-01-04T21:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leithart.level2d.com\/?p=387"},"modified":"2017-09-06T22:49:08","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T16:49:08","slug":"christ-as-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/leithart\/2004\/01\/christ-as-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Christ as Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\">\n<\/head><body><p><\/p><p> Also in the Nov 2003  <i> IJST  <\/i> is the first installment of Robert Jenson\u2019s Maurice Lectures (University of London), entitled \u201cChrist as Culture.\u201d  Among other things, Jenson criticizes HR Niebuhr\u2019s framing of the issue as \u201cChrist and culture\u201d by noting that \u201cChrist\u201d (Messiah) is meaningful within an already-existing culture, that of Israel, so that all questions of Christianity and culture are questions about the relationship between two cultures; insists that the church is herself a culture, and pushes that a step further by saying that Christ as  <i> totus Christus  <\/i> is also a culture; raises questions about the concrete implications of saying that the church is the continuation of the culture of Israel (eg., \u201cAre we permitted simply to skip over Leviticus?\u201d); claims that Christ is not only culture but also polity, and traces the history of Israel\u2019s polity as a history of Christ; argues that part of the proclamation of Christ\u2019s sovereignty over the polities of the world is the claim that WE in Christ are also sovereign over these polities; endorses Bellarmine\u2019s claim that the church is \u201cas visible as the republic of Venice\u201d; and draws the necessary inference that the church, being a polity in this world, is necessarily in conflict with all other polities.  All that and more in a few pages of Jenson\u2019s characteristically evocative (and sometimes maddeningly vague) prose.   <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Also
