{"id":4404,"date":"2008-12-03T15:51:17","date_gmt":"2008-12-03T15:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leithart.level2d.com\/?p=1404"},"modified":"2017-09-06T22:51:47","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T16:51:47","slug":"cosmic-harmony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/leithart\/2008\/12\/cosmic-harmony\/","title":{"rendered":"Cosmic harmony"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\">\n<\/head><body><p><\/p><p> From Eusebius\u2019s panegyric to Constantine: \u201cas the many-stringed  <!--k30--> lyre <!--k31-->  is composed of different  <!--k30--> chords <!--k31--> , both sharp and flat, some slightly, others  <!--k30--> tensely <!--k31-->  strained, and others intermediate between the two extremes, yet all attuned according to the rules of  <!--k30--> harmonic <!--k31-->  art; even so this material world, compounded as it is of many elements, containing opposite and  <!--k30--> antagonist <!--k31-->  principles, as moisture and dryness, cold and heat, yet blended into one harmonious whole, may justly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08571c.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>  be termed a mighty instrument framed by the hand of  <!--k30--> God <!--k31--> : an instrument on which the  <!--k30--> Divine <!--k31-->   <!--k30--> Word <!--k31--> , himself not composed of parts or opposing principles, but indivisible and  <!--k30--> uncompounded <!--k31--> , performs with  <!--k30--> perfect <!--k31-->  skill, and produces a melody at once  <!--k30--> accordant <!--k31-->  with the willof his  <!--k30--> Father <!--k31-->  the  <!--k30--> Supreme <!--k31-->   <!--k30--> Lord <!--k31-->  of all, and glorious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06585a.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>  to himself.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> And this from the same oration, comparing Jesus with Orpheus: <\/p>\n<p>  <!--more--> \u201cThe  <!--k30--> Grecian <!--k31-->   <!--k30--> myth <!--k31-->  tells us that  <!--k30--> Orpheus <!--k31-->  had power to charm  <!--k30--> ferocious <!--k31-->  beasts, and tame their savage  <!--k30--> spirit <!--k31--> , by striking the  <!--k30--> chords <!--k31-->  of his instrument with a master hand: and this story is celebrated by the  <!--k30--> Greeks <!--k31--> , and generally believed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/02408b.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a> , that an unconscious instrument could subdue the untamed brute, and draw the trees from their places, in obedience <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/11181c.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>  to its  <!--k30--> melodious <!--k31-->  power. But he who is the author of  <!--k30--> perfect <!--k31-->   <!--k30--> harmony <!--k31--> , the  <!--k30--> all-wise Word of God <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/09328a.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a> , desiring to apply every remedy to the manifold diseases of the souls <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14153a.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>  of men, employed that human nature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/10715a.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>  which is the  <!--k30--> workmanship <!--k31-->  of his own wisdom, as an instrument by the  <!--k30--> melodious <!--k31-->   <!--k30--> strains <!--k31-->  of which he  <!--k30--> soothed <!--k31--> , not indeed the brute  <!--k30--> creation <!--k31--> , but savages endued with  <!--k30--> reason <!--k31--> ; healing each furious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01489a.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>  temper, each fierce and angry <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01489a.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>   <!--k30--> passion <!--k31-->  of the soul <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14153a.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a> , both in  <!--k30--> civilized <!--k31-->  and barbarous nations, by the  <!--k30--> remedial <!--k31-->  power of his  <!--k30--> Divine <!--k31-->   <!--k30--> doctrine <!--k31--> . Like a physician of  <!--k30--> perfect <!--k31-->  skill, he met the diseases of their souls <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14153a.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>  who sought for  <!--k30--> God <!--k31-->  in  <!--k30--> nature <!--k31-->  and in bodies, by a fitting and  <!--k30--> kindred <!--k31-->  remedy, and showed them  <!--k30--> God <!--k31-->  in human <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/09580c.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">  <\/a>   <!--k30--> form <!--k31--> .\u201d
