Joel 2:25 plays a strangely prominent role in the Arian controversy. \u00a0In the NASB translation, the Lord promises to \u201cmake up to you for the years that the swarming\u00a0locust has eaten, the creeping\u00a0locust, the stripping\u00a0locust and the gnawing\u00a0locust, my great army which I sent among you.\u201d <\/p>\n

In the Greek translations of the fourth century, \u201cgreat army\u201d was rendered \u201cgreat power\u201d and one of the locust species was translated as \u201ccaterpillar.\u201d \u00a0The Arians used Joel\u2019s statement about \u201cgreat power\u201d to relativize 1 Corinthians 1:24, a favorite text of Athanasius\u2019: Sure, they reasoned, Christ is the \u201cpower of God\u201d but caterpillars are \u201cgreat powers\u201d too, so the Son is not particularly unique. <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
