{"id":5049,"date":"2009-10-31T05:40:08","date_gmt":"2009-10-31T05:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leithart.level2d.com\/?p=2049"},"modified":"2017-09-06T23:41:35","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T17:41:35","slug":"finished-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/leithart\/2009\/10\/finished-words\/","title":{"rendered":"Finished words"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\">\n<\/head><body><p><\/p><p> \u201cJesus had finished  <em> all <\/em>  these words\u201d (Matthew 26:1). \u00a0Not only has Jesus finished the last of the five discourses; He has stopped speaking to Israel altogether. \u00a0Through the next several chapters, He barely speaks at all. <\/p>\n<p> This is an announcement of judgment against Israel.\u00a0 From the beginning of His ministry, Jesus has been talking \u2013 He\u2019s laid out a way of righteousness and peace for Israel, commissions His disciples, disclosed the secrets of the king of heaven, told His disciples how to govern their communities and about the demand for forgiveness, the demand to avoid offense to children.\u00a0 Israel never listens.\u00a0 Instead, the Pharisees try to catch Him in His words; priests and elders plot against Him; they accuse Him of being in league with the devil.\u00a0 So Jesus announces the judgment that waits for Israel, and then stops. <\/p>\n<p> He has no more words for Israel. \u00a0He has only one word for the high priest, a warning that the Son of man will be enthroned at the right hand of power (26:64). \u00a0When He again turns to teaching, at the end of Matthew\u2019s gospel, He\u2019s sending His disciples to the nations, the Gentiles, to teach them all that He\u2019s commanded.\u00a0 He has said all He will say to Israel. \u00a0He turns from them, and provokes them to jealousy by directing His attention to the nations. <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cJesus had finished all these words\u201d (Matthew 26:1). \u00a0Not only has Jesus finished the last of the five discourses; He has stopped speaking to Israel altogether. \u00a0Through the next several chapters, He barely speaks at all.
