<\/p>

Like Matthew, Luke records Jesus\u2019 quotation from Deuteronomy 8:3 in response to the devil\u2019s temptation. But the quotations differ: <\/p>\n

Matthew 4:4: \u201cMan shall not live on bread alone but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.\u201d
Luke 4:4: \u201cMan shall not live on bread alone.\u201d <\/p>\n

What\u2019s happened to the rest of the quotation? Luke 4:22 supplies the answer. When Jesus speaks in the synagogue at Nazareth, everyone is initially astonished at \u201cthe gracious words that were proceeding out of His mouth.\u201d <\/p>\n

(In Greek, the phrase \u201cproceeding out of His mouth\u201d in Luke 4:22 is slightly different from the quotation in Matthew 4:4; Matthew uses rhema <\/i> instead of logos <\/i> for \u201cwords\u201d and dia <\/i> rather than ek <\/i> in the prepositional phrase \u201cout of His mouth. The verb \u201cproceed\u201d and the word for \u201cmouth\u201d are the same in both passages, however, and the substance of the phrase is the same.) <\/p>\n

Luke does not have Jesus say that life comes through Yahweh\u2019s words. Instead, he tells us that the people marvel at the words of grace and life that come from Jesus\u2019 own mouth.
