It\u2019s less often recognized that Jesus\u2019 death also glorifies; by His suffering, He brings \u201cmany sons to glory\u201d (Hebrews 2:10). <\/p>\n<p> Thomas makes a place for \u201cglorification\u201d as an effect of Christ\u2019s death largely by his attention to the liberation of the saints from Abraham\u2019s bosom or the  <em> limbus patrum <\/em> . Explaining how Christ\u2019s \u201cdescent into hell\u201d delivered the \u201choly fathers\u201d ( <em> ST <\/em>  III, 52, 5), Thomas distinguishes between the debt incurred by personal sin and the debt incurred by \u201cthe sin of the whole human race, which each one in his origin contracts from our first parent.\u201d The penalty for original sin is death but also \u201cexclusion from glory, as is evident in Genesis 2 and 3: because God cast out man from paradise after sin, having beforehand threatened him with death.\u201d Under the Old Law, \u201cthe approach to the life of glory was not opened,\u201d because of \u201cour first parent\u2019s sin.\u201d Christ open the way and thus not only \u201cfreed [them] from penal sufferings\u201d but \u201cbestowed something upon them as to their attaining glory.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> It\u2019s possible to affirm that Christ\u2019s passion and death brings sons to glory without positing the <em>  limbus patrum <\/em> . But it sure helps. Perhaps Protestants, in rejecting  <em> all <\/em>  medieval notions of limbo made it more difficult to see that glorification is an effect of the atonement. <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christ\u2019s death delivered from sin.
