Sweet Tweets for 11/15/13: Concrete Help November 15, 2013

Super Typhoon Haiyan battered Tacloban city in central Philippines November 10, 2013. Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded killed at least 10,000 people in the central Philippines province of Leyte, a senior police official said on Sunday, with coastal towns and the regional capital devastated by huge waves. Super typhoon Haiyan destroyed about 70 to 80 percent of the area in its path as it tore through the province on Friday, said chief superintendent Elmer Soria, a regional police director.

What a week! In the space of one week, we’ve seen the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, the emotional response of the world, the gathering of our bishops in Baltimore, and concrete “hands on” help in the Philippines. Read any news account and you’ll see that all of us must get involved in being a part of the solution in real ways, not simply with well wishes on social media. To that end, our bishops have announced a second collection to aid Catholic Relief Services’ efforts in the region. Let’s all consider what small (or large!) sacrifices we can make to support their work.

Additionally, I would like to urge you personally to participate in the Greater Good Technology campaign being spearheaded by our own John Clem. I’ll have more on this innovative program on the blog later today. This is technology at the service of the Word!

Thanks to John Clem, the Director and Media Minister at Catholic Web Services (http://catholicws.com/), we’ve got a full recap of all of this week’s most important action both online and around the world.
