Have you been frustrated by Lost<\/em>\u2018s endless parade of mysteries and loose ends?<\/p>\n

Have you tried to convince yourself that J.J. Abrams knows where it\u2019s all headed, and how all the mysteries tie together?<\/p>\n

Have you been yearning to believe it\u2019s all part of \u201cintelligent design\u201d?<\/p>\n

Abandon all hope.<\/p>\n

This may be nothing new to you, but it\u2019s disappointing to me. Like Alias<\/em>, this show\u2019s indications that there\u2019s a grand design, meaning to the madness, now appears to be just a bunch of hooey, and the only reason to keep wondering about the loose ends is to imagine who will improvise the cleverest excuses for the chaos.<\/p>\n

Aren\u2019t you glad life isn\u2019t like that?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was absolutely no master plan on Lost,\u201d insists David Fury, a co-executive producer last season who wrote the series\u2019 two best episodes and is now a writer-producer on 24. \u201cAnybody who said that was lying.\u201d \u201cOn a show like Lost, it becomes a great big shaggy-dog story,\u201d he continues cheerily. \u201cThey keep saying there\u2019s meaning in everything, and I\u2019m here to tell you no \u2014 a lot of things are just arbitrary. What I always tried to do was connect these random elements, to create the illusion that it was all adding up to something.\u201d Many plot elements were concocted on the fly, Fury says; for example, they didn\u2019t know Hurley won the lottery until it came time to write his episode. \u201cI don\u2019t like to talk about when we come up with ideas,\u201d Lindelof demurs. \u201cIt\u2019s a magic trick. But we planned that plot: We seeded references to it in earlier episodes.\u201d Fury disagrees. He says scenes with those references were filmed much later and inserted into earlier yet-to-air episodes: \u201cIt\u2019s a brilliant trick to make us look smart. But doing that created a huge budget problem.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
