It stumbles from time to time, but it\u2019s full of surprises, great characters, and the sensational cast makes even the forgettable episodes worth watching.<br>\n<strong><\/strong><br>\n<strong>Best Actor, Drama \u2013<\/strong> Philip Seymour Hoffman, <em>Capote <\/em><br>\n<em>Fan. Tastic.<\/em> This really is one of the great performances of the year, and the best from this group of nominees.<br>\n<strong><\/strong><br>\n<strong>Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role In A Series, Mini-Series Or<br>\nMotion Picture Made For Television<\/strong> \u2013 Paul Newman \u2013 <em>Empire Falls <\/em><br>\n<em>Justice! <\/em>Newman\u2019s performance made <em>Empire Falls <\/em>worth watching. He is a joy to watch in this movie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series<\/strong> \u2013 Drama Hugh Laurie \u2013 <em>House <\/em><br>\n<em>Brilliant<\/em>. Laurie\u2019s performance makes this show one of the most engaging on television. Has a British actor ever done a better American accent? Has a hospital show ever been so consistently surprising?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television<\/strong> \u2013 <em>Empire Falls <\/em><br>\nOkay. It\u2019s a decent film, but Newman\u2019s so much fun in it that I\u2019m happy to see it win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series \u2013 Musical Or Comedy<\/strong> \u2013 Steve Carell \u2013 <em>The Office <\/em><br>\n<em>YEEEESSSSS!!!<\/em> Okay, so it\u2019s a ripoff of a British series, but Carrell and the rest of the cast have made it something unique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Actress, Musical\/Comedy<\/strong> \u2013 Reese Witherspoon, <em>Walk the Line <\/em><br>\nIn a year that\u2019s painfully low on great performances by lead actresses, Witherspoon gave one of the few worth noticing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Picture Drama \u2013<\/strong> <em>Brokeback Mountain <\/em><br>\nFar, far, far from the best film. Sure, the performances are strong. Yeah, the scenery\u2019s pretty. But if you\u2019re one of the folks who voted for it, I\u2019d love to hear you explain why this is a better movie than\u2026 oh\u2026 <em>Millions, A History of Violence, Tony Takitani, 2046, Broken Flowers, Capote, Munich, Downfall, Nobody Knows, Good Night, and Good Luck, Syriana, The Squid and the Whale, Pride and Prejudice, The Ballad of Jack and Rose, Winter Solstice, <\/em>or\u2026 heck, even <em>Batman Begins<\/em>! For starters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Actor, Musical\/Comedy \u2013 <\/strong>Joaquin Phoenix, <em>Walk the Line <\/em><br>\nIt\u2019s not a musical. It\u2019s not a comedy. What\u2019s it doing in this category?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Director \u2013<\/strong> Ang Lee, <em>Brokeback Mountain <\/em><br>\nIt\u2019s his least creative, least interesting film, popular primarily for its political momentum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Supporting Actress<\/strong> \u2013 Rachel Weisz, <em>Contant Gardener <\/em><br>\nStrange choice, especially when the only thing almost every critic agrees about is that Michelle Williams is heartbreakingly good in <em>Brokeback Mountain<\/em>. I love Weisz, and since I met her in L.A., my admiration has quadrupled. But she\u2019ll do bigger, better work in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Supporting Actor<\/strong> \u2013 George Clooney, <em>Syriana <\/em><br>\nHe was very, very good, yes; and of these nominees, he\u2019s the best. But what happened to Ed Harris and William Hurt from <em>A History of Violence<\/em>? Two unforgettable performances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Television<\/strong> <strong>Series \u2013 Musical Or Comedy<\/strong> \u2013 <em>Desperate Housewives <\/em><br>\nBleccch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Screenplay<\/strong> \u2013 <em>Brokeback Mountain <\/em><br>\nNO! In a year of many good screenplays, the writing for this film was nothing particularly special. I\u2019ll be saying this a lot in the coming days, but if you sit down and watch a double feature of <em>Brokeback Mountain<\/em> and <em>Millions,<\/em> or <em>Brokeback Mountain<\/em> and <em>Walk the Line<\/em>, or <em>Brokeback Mountain<\/em> and <em>Cache,<\/em> or <em>Brokeback Mountain<\/em> and <em>A History of Violence<\/em>, you\u2019ll start to see through all of this hype.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Original Song<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cA Love That Will Never Grow Old\u201d \u2014 Brokeback Mountain Music By: Gustavo Santaolalla Lyrics By: Bernie Taupin<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Original Score<\/strong> \u2013 John Williams \u2013 <em>Memoirs Of A Geisha <\/em><br>\nHis score for <em>Munich<\/em> was better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interesting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Performance By An Actor In A Mini-Series Or A Motion Picture Made For Television<\/strong> \u2013 Jonathan Rhys Meyers \u2013 <em>Elvis <\/em><br>\nHuh. So, they\u2019re celebrating Meyers as Elvis. Will they celebrate Phoenix as Johnny Cash?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Foreign Language Film<\/strong> \u2013 <em>Paradise Now<\/em><br>\nReally? Haven\u2019t seen it yet, but is it better than <em>Cache? 2046?
