\u201cIt was 2:00 am. Somehow, four hours had passed like minutes\u00a0while we shared our life experiences about places we had visited\u00a0around the world, our families, our jobs, our likes and dislikes.\u00a0I was entranced by this man who spoke four languages fluently,\u00a0enjoyed international travel as much as I did, and took care of his\u00a0whole family back in Brazil. He was attractive, well educated,\u00a0and amused by my stories.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI have to go.\u201d I said. \u201cI have a boat trip early tomorrow on one\u00a0of the lakes here before I leave Bariloche tomorrow night.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWait\u2014I would like to be in touch with you. How can I reach\u00a0you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I hesitated. He was not Muslim. I could never see him again.<\/em><\/p>\n

In spite of my qualms, I handed him a tiny piece of ripped\u00a0paper. \u201cThis is my cell number in Argentina. But remember, I can\u00a0only receive calls on this phone, not make them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I told myself it was safe. The number would exist for only\u00a0another twenty-four hours, and besides, he was returning to\u00a0<\/em>Brazil the next morning.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

That night, I couldn\u2019t sleep. Inexplicably, I had an immediate\u00a0sense of loss, knowing that I would never see Marcelo again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Tell us about yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m an American girl who grew up in a beach town in southern California. \u00a0My family members are very devout Irish Catholics and everyone believes in God. \u00a0I started to question who God was and what is just in the world at a very young age. \u00a0I always had a passion for the unknown and the world beyond my neighborhood. \u00a0I \u00a0began traveling internationally at a young age and have visited 39 countries to date. \u00a0I was most impressed with the hopsitality of Muslim families in the Middle East and in Kashmir. \u00a0I wrote a book entitled: \u00a0\u201cSola: Women can travel alone.\u201d about 12 years ago. \u00a0But I decided not to publish the book once I realized that the message I was sending could lead some women into dangerous encounters abroad. \u00a0\u00a0Aside from traveling, I love design, culinary arts, listening to waves from the ocean and being mom to my two very strong boys.<\/p>\n

Why were you drawn to this project?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My very close friend Haneefa\u00a0enthusiastically\u00a0encouraged me to submit my love story to this book. \u00a0She said my story was the most wonderful she ever heard and everyone she told it to was inspired to not give up on marrying someone from a different culture.<\/p>\n

What was the most challenging part of sharing your story?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Knowing that many Muslims would be reading it and would be unhappy with how some events took place.<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s one thing you hope that readers will take away from your story, what is it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
