{"id":5022,"date":"2013-01-09T03:08:53","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T09:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/loveisanorientation\/?p=5022"},"modified":"2013-01-09T19:59:14","modified_gmt":"2013-01-10T01:59:14","slug":"i-have-been-implicated-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/loveisanorientation\/2013\/01\/i-have-been-implicated-again\/","title":{"rendered":"I Have Been Implicated, Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>As someone who leads an organization that works to build bridges between opposing worldviews fighting to dictate cultural normalcy, I am frequently implicated, falsely, in a variety of activist-based claims trying to support \u201ctheir side.\u201d This happens because The Marin Foundation, as a peacemaking organization, doesn\u2019t take sides but rather focuses on how to peacefully and productively shift the medium of engagement between the two, by intentionally partnering with both and bringing them together.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cproblem\u201d with such a bridge building philosophy is that Population A is inherently skeptic of Population B, because Population A agrees on little to nothing with Population B and feels Population B is trying to discredit and undermine all that Population A stands for, works towards and believes in.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Population B is also inherently skeptic of Population A, because Population B agrees on little to nothing with Population A and feels Population A is trying to discredit and undermine all that Population B stands for, work towards and believes in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=C4naXLyrvJg&amp;list=UUhpmvxn07AK8uMOrq85CqpA\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Here\u2019s a short video I made last year talking about extreme activists only functioning in their extremist circles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus\u2026<\/p>\n<p>When you are the entity intentionally working with both Population\u2019s A and B, seeing that each are inherently skeptic of each other, they in turn, are also inherently skeptic of the entity working with \u201cthe other.\u201d And when you, like The Marin Foundation, are working with both of \u201cthe others,\u201d we get implicated in a lot of LGBT advocate news used against conservatives; as well as being implicated in a lot of conservative news used against LGBTs.<\/p>\n<p>I try not to read activist websites, from either end. Much of their messaging is nothing new\u2013same arguments that are repeated over and over again. The only difference that I have seen over time is that in most cases the more an activist website or org is around, the more they become angry and unwilling to dialogue in any fashion. But it\u2019s not that I don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening, especially since I get tons of emails, FB messages, tweets, etc from people from all over the spectrum who send me lots of info. <strong>And when I am implicated in any of it, I directly respond so the truth is in the open.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I was made aware by two friends and colleagues, <a href=\"http:\/\/wthrockmorton.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dr. Warren Throckmorton<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exgaywatch.com\/wp\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">David Roberts<\/a>, that a reparative therapy website <em>that I had never heard of<\/em> had an extensive \u201ctestimonial\u201d from an <em>anonymous person<\/em> named Ajax claiming that I met with them \u201cweekly for the duration of their college career\u201d for reparative therapy. You can read the full comment <a href=\"http:\/\/voices-of-change.com\/our-voices-of-change\/#comment-17\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I want to be very clear:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have never<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cmet with any college student weekly for the duration of their college careers.\u201d The only person I have ever met with weekly for any extended period of time is the gay Jewish man with AIDS on a journey to figure out who Yeshua is, that I wrote about on the first pages of my book. And he is one of my very good friends today. Also, they describe The Marin Foundation as \u201cbringing a message of hope and freedom to the gay community.\u201d <strong>Those words have never, ever been uttered by us in any fashion or in any medium of communication<\/strong>. I actually make <em>very<\/em> cognizant choices to stay away from all \u201cculture war language,\u201d including such words as \u201chope and freedom to the gay community.\u201d For those that have followed our work, you know that it is absolutely true that we never use words such as \u201chomosexual\u201d \u201clifestyle\u201d \u201clove the sinner hate the sin\u201d etc. I have spoken publicly about this reasoning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themarinfoundation.org\/resources\/media-library\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">many, many times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I also want to be very clear about this:<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception in 2005, <em>The Marin Foundation, nor any of its past or current employees, promote, recommend, assist or have assisted any LGBT people in \u201creparative therapy.\u201d<\/em> The Marin Foundation does not believe in the merits of \u201creparative therapy,\u201d and <em>have seen first hand, including by some of our LGBT employees, the extreme shame and damaged caused by such \u201ctherapy.\u201d<\/em> Anything said about The Marin Foundation to the contrary of what I have just stated is a lie.<\/p>\n<p>As a bridge building organization between the LGBT and conservative communities, I am in deep relationship on a daily basis with people from all different shades of faith and sexuality\u2013including those who consider themselves LGBT atheists (some of whom have experienced the perils of \u201creparative therapy\u201d) all the way to those who consider themsevles ex-gay (some of whom have themselves gone through \u201creparative therapy\u201d). But let me reiterate, <strong>I have never engaged anyone in a \u201creparative therapy\u201d context.
