Transgender women were more likely to experience hate\u00a0violence in shelters and in public areas. Transgender women were less likely to report to the police.\u00a0Much of the violence impacting transgender survivors and victims overall also impacted transgender women\u00a0to similar or heightened degrees, as transgender women experience hate violence that is oftentimes based on\u00a0both transphobia and sexism. The severity of violence reported by transgender women in 2013, compounded\u00a0by the high proportion of transgender women homicide victims, suggests that transgender women face an\u00a0alarming vulnerability to hate violence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocate.com\/commentary\/2014\/11\/20\/op-ed-why-we-still-need-trans-day-remembrance\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">This piece<\/a>, by TDOR\u2019s founder\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gwendolyn Ann Smith, highlights some of the differences between 1988\u2019s TDOR inception and the way we celebrate TDOR now:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When the Transgender Day of Remembrance first began, trans people were nameless victims in many cases. \u00a0Our killers would do their best to erase our existence from the world. And law enforcement, the media, and others would continue the job. We would be regularly, consistently misgendered and labeled with names we did not choose \u2014 that is, when we weren\u2019t simply reported as \u201cunknown man in women\u2019s clothing\u201d or \u201cbearded woman.\u201d The increased visibility of the transgender community as a whole \u2014 and, by extension, TDOR \u2014 has changed things. It has not ended antitrans violence, but it has made it a lot harder to hide or cover up. When we are misgendered and misnamed by the media, we have the strength to correct.
