I have to admit to feeling a bit sick. I just saw two things in very close proximity. The first was a headline announcing<\/a> that Beavercreek, Ohio, police were cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting death of John Crawford III. The second was the surveillance video<\/a> of that shooting, which occurred in a Walmart.<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\nCrawford had picked up an\u00a0unloaded\u00a0BB\u00a0gun\u00a0off a\u00a0shelf and was swinging it gently, point down, while standing in an aisle talking on the phone. The autopsy report found that\u00a0Crawford was shot in the back of the left arm and in the left side. From what we can see in the video, it does not appear that police ordered Crawford to put the gun down or gave him time to do it. They just . . . shot him. He didn\u2019t raise the gun or point it at anyone\u2014he was just standing there. And yet the police involved have been cleared of all wrongdoing.<\/p>\nThe police arrived on the scene because a Walmart customer, Ronald Ritchie, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whio.com\/audio\/911-calls-of-beavercreek-walmart-shooting\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">called 911<\/a> and reported that a black man was walking around the store carrying\u00a0a gun and pointing it at people. Ritchie\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/sep\/07\/ohio-black-man-killed-by-police-walmart-doubts-cast-witnesss-account\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">later admitted<\/a> that Crawford had not in fact\u00a0pointed the gun at anyone, but reaffirmed his decision, saying\u00a0\u201ceven still, it\u2019s a gun in Walmart, in a public place, inducing panic.\u201d But\u00a0Ohio is an open carry state, so a gun in a public place is not in fact illegal. Further, none of the many people who passed Crawford in the surveillance video appeared panicked. (It\u2019s worth noting that a 37-year-old woman died in the store that day of a heart attack in the panic that followed Crawford\u2019s shooting.)<\/p>\nI was struck by a comment I read while going over the details of this case. It was a statement made by a black mother. She said she doesn\u2019t allow her children to have toy guns or water guns because of the risk that someone\u2014vigilante or police\u2014will think it real\u00a0and shoot one of her children. This is not something I\u2019ve ever had to think about. Last summer I bought my children\u00a0some water guns for a party we had, and they had a blast playing in the yard with them. I didn\u2019t have to worry for a moment\u00a0that someone would\u00a0think one real, or see my white children as a threat. That\u2019s privilege for you.<\/p>\nThe Justice Department will be reviewing Crawford\u2019s\u00a0shooting.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I have to admit to feeling a bit sick.
