Have a look:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/236x\/b8\/23\/a4\/b823a41097d5a777e6e8090f1e51ac22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"172\"><\/p>\n<p>The meme features\u00a0a picture of Jill Stein with the text \u201cThis is the first woman to receive her party\u2019s nomination. Don\u2019t buy the Hillary hype.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I get that not everyone does the whole history thing. What I find disturbing about this meme is not that Jill Stein isn\u2019t the first woman to receive <em>a<\/em> party\u2019s nomination (literally dozens of\u00a0women <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_female_United_States_presidential_and_vice-presidential_candidates\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hit that milestone<\/a> before she did). It\u2019s that she\u2019s not the first woman to win <em>her party\u2019s<\/em> nomination. The Green Party nomination went to former\u00a0African American congresswoman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cynthia_McKinney#2012_congressional_election\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cynthia McKinney<\/a>\u00a0in 2008.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/a\/aa\/Cynthia_McKinney.jpg\/800px-Cynthia_McKinney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"331\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have my issues with the Green Party, and I\u2019ll be voting for Hillary come November, but if you\u2019re going to go Green, please at least do\u00a0enough research on the party to ensure that you don\u2019t unwittingly\u00a0whitewash women like McKinney out of its history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While we\u2019re at it, let\u2019s take a moment to reflect on the many, many, <em>many<\/em> women who have run for president over the past two decades. Every woman who has entered politics and put her name out there has been an integral part of the greater effort to bring about\u00a0women\u2019s political equality, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2015\/04\/victoria-woodhull-first-woman-presidential-candidate-116828\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">from Victoria Woodhull to Hillary Clinton<\/a>. Let\u2019s not erase any of them. We can celebrate the moment we\u2019re in\u2014with gender parity in the presidential nominees of the two major parties <em>and<\/em>\u00a0the two most significant third parties (though not in vice presidential nominees) without overlooking the important history that brought us to where we are today.<\/p>\n<p><b>I have a <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/lovejoyfeminism\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>Patreon<\/b><\/a><b>!
