In a speech last summer<\/a>, Trump suggested creating an ideological screening test to bar from the U.S.\u00a0Muslims who hold\u00a0\u201cthe hateful ideology of Radical Islam\u2014its oppression of women, gays, children, and nonbelievers.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained further as follows:<\/p>\n

A Trump Administration will establish a clear principle that will govern all decisions pertaining to immigration: we should only admit into this country those who share our values and respect our people.<\/p>\n

\u2026<\/p>\n

In addition to screening out all members or sympathizers of terrorist groups, we must also screen out any who have hostile attitudes towards our country or its principles\u2014or who believe that Sharia law should supplant American law.<\/p>\n

Those who do not believe in our Constitution, or who support bigotry and hatred, will not be admitted for immigration into the country.<\/p>\n

Only those who we expect to flourish in our country \u2013 and to embrace a tolerant American society \u2013 should be issued immigration visas.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

These statements make the results of a recent poll<\/a>\u00a0feel highly ironic.<\/p>\n

\n

While homophobia certainly still exists in American Muslim communities, as a whole, American Muslims are slowly becoming more accepting of homosexuality.<\/p>\n

And notably, they\u2019re doing it at a faster rate than white evangelical Protestants.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Pew Research Center survey<\/a>\u00a0conducted this year found that 52 percent of U.S. Muslims say homosexuality should be accepted by society.\u00a0In contrast, only 34 percent of white evangelical Protestants believed in 2016 that homosexuality should be accepted by society.<\/p>\n

The rate at which white evangelicals are shifting their views is slower than the rate for Muslims.\u00a0\u00a0White evangelicals shifted their views by 11 percentage points between 2006 and 2016. Muslims\u2019 acceptance of homosexuality shot up by 25 percentage points between 2007 and 2017.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

And this change isn\u2019t being driven solely by Muslims born in the U.S., either. While 57% of U.S.\u00a0Muslims born in the country\u00a0say homosexuality should be accepted by society, so do 49% of foreign-born U.S.\u00a0Muslims, a number\u00a0far higher that white evangelicals\u2019 34%. The numbers didn\u2019t dip much for U.S.\u00a0Muslims who said religion was \u201cvery important\u201d to their lives, either: 47% of these respondents stated that homosexuality should be accepted by society.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, based on Pew surveys<\/a>,\u00a0Baby Boomer\u00a0U.S. Muslims are\u00a0more likely to believe homosexuality should be accepted by society (42%) than were Baby Boomer evangelicals (32%), and Millennial U.S. Muslims are more likely to believe that homosexuality should be accepted by society (60%) than Millennial evangelicals (52%). Furthermore, U.S.\u00a0Muslims (U.S.-born and foreign born, old and young) are rapidly becoming more accepting of homosexuality over time as\u00a0white evangelical views remain more stagnant.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not saying there\u2019s not still progress to be made. U.S. Muslims are less likely than the U.S. general public to believe that homosexuality should be accepted by society (52% compared with 63%) and Millennial\u00a0U.S. Muslims are less accepting that U.S. Millennials overall (60% compared with 74%). Still, the trajectory is towards greater acceptance, and a\u00a0comparison with white evangelicals is important because of Trump\u2019s embrace of that group even as he lambasts Muslims for lack of tolerance.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a tremendous audience,\u201d Trump\u00a0told Pat Robertson<\/a> while appearing on his 700 Club\u00a0earlier this summer. \u201cYou have the people that I love: the evangelicals.\u201d Trump made these comments\u00a0despite the fact that Robertson is extremely<\/em> anti-gay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s rhetorical lambasting of\u00a0Muslims\u00a0for being intolerant\u00a0of homosexuality isn\u2019t actually about ensuring that\u00a0gay rights are respected. It\u2019s about\u00a0fanning Islamophobia.<\/p>\n
