Have you ever experienced a \u201cmoment of silence\u201d? You know, that awkward moment right after you say something without thinking and completely shock your conservative friend or relative? Let me offer some examples.<\/p>\n
Some time back I was out shopping with my mom.<\/p>\n
Me: \u201cThis looks like the kind of material my friend Anna is looking at for her bridesmaids\u2019 dresses. She\u2019s in full wedding planning at the moment, it\u2019s all she talks about.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mom: \u201cOh, that\u2019s sweet. When is her wedding?\u201d<\/p>\n
Me: \u201cIn a year and a half.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mom: \u201cOh. That must be really hard to wait that long.\u201d<\/p>\n
Me: \u201cWell it\u2019s not like they aren\u2019t already living together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mom: \u2026silence\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n <\/em>Here\u2019s another one, from a time my husband and I hung out with one of my brothers last year:<\/p>\n Me: (To my husband) You\u2019re going to love the Christmas present I\u2019m getting you!<\/p>\n Husband: Oh really? How are you so sure?<\/p>\n Me: Oh, I\u2019m sure. I told my friend Jared what I\u2019m getting for you, and Jared said I\u2019m the best wife ever.<\/p>\n Brother: (To my husband) It sounds like you better watch out!<\/p>\n Husband: No worries, he\u2019s gay.<\/p>\n Brother: \u2026silence\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n At first I highly regretted each of these instances \u2013 wishing that I hadn\u2019t mentioned that my friend was living with her fiance, and that my husband hadn\u2019t said that our friend Jared was gay \u2013 but then I kind of wondered if perhaps little offhand comments like these help to normalize these sorts of things \u2013\u00a0cohabitating\u00a0or having gay friends \u2013 or at least make them less foreign.<\/p>\n And now it\u2019s you\u2019re turn.
