During the early years, however, Jose and I practiced a parenting style consistent with what we were learning in church\u2014negative emotions were \u201cbad\u201d and somehow needed to be avoided or at least taken care of quick. <\/strong> For our kids, this looked like being mad at them for being mad (yes, I get the irony). \u00a0Things like \u201cGo to your room if you are angry and come out when you\u2019re happy again!\u201d \u201cStop crying now!\u201d and \u201cYou need to change your attitude right this minute!\u201d flowed freely from our lips.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Um, YES. I\u2019ve read some good stuff written by people with similar backgrounds to mine about teachings on emotions \u2013 especially on \u201chappy\u201d being the only acceptable emotion<\/a> \u2013 and one of these days I\u2019ll get around to blogging on that topic myself. Because it\u2019s important.<\/p>\n

Also, Authentic Parenting offers a list of \u201cSeven Tips to Avoid Conflict at Family Get-Togethers.<\/a>\u201d This list is geared toward dealing with people who think your parenting is batshit insane, but I actually think the tips also work well in general for those in situations like mine.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
