It\u2019s actually a very common thing to go for coffee and cake at 4 PM. Many do it every day. Mrs Daniel\u2019s neighbor was working in her garden and came over for a quick\u00a0chat. Daniel\u2019s Mom introduced me and the neighbor asked me what I did for a living. When I told her that I just finished high school, she looked at me, nodded and said \u201cOh my, you went back to school? That\u2019s great!\u201d Then she told us the story of her nephew who did the same at 26 and is now an engineer. She finished by padding Daniel on the back and saying \u201cSmart one you got yourself there!\u201d. I smiled, simply happy that she didn\u2019t know, didn\u2019t ask about the past.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Slactivist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2012\/07\/15\/stray-thoughts\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">writes about<\/a> the complete lack of compassion by right wing politicians:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Speaking of plutocrats and of really dumb people \u2026\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2012\/07\/09\/perry-proudly-refuses-health-care-to-1-2-million-low-income-texans\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rick Perry has \u201cproudly\u201d rejected federal funds to provide health insurance for 1.2 million poor people who have the added misfortune of living in Texas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ideological explanation for that is a tortured\u00a0claim\u00a0that in Perry\u2019s ideal dreamworld, Medicaid would be replaced with a\u00a0hypothetically\u00a0preferable conservative alternative. That alternative doesn\u2019t exist in the real world (it barely even exists on paper \u2014 the alternative conservative vision for health care was signed into law two years ago as the Affordable Care Act). But if Perry can\u2019t have his ideal dreamworld, then he figures the least he can do is kick poor people while they\u2019re down \u2014 1.2\u00a0<em>million<\/em>\u00a0poor people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sierra <a href=\"http:\/\/phoenixandolivebranch.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/16\/libertarians-welfare-private-charities-why-havent-they\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">asks why libertarians don\u2019t just set about creating their dream world<\/a> in which the poor are somehow magically all provided for by private charities:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Libertarians: If you want private charities and churches to step in and save the families you kick off welfare,\u00a0<strong>why haven\u2019t they begun<\/strong>? Why is anyone on welfare at all, if private individuals, churches and charities are waiting with open arms? Why aren\u2019t churchgoers going out into the street and gathering up all the homeless people, offering to pay their rent and\u00a0medical bills\u00a0and help them\u00a0find jobs\u00a0(or better yet, employ them themselves)?<\/p>\n<p>I suspect it\u2019s because libertarians know that\u00a0<strong>human altruism is never strong enough to eradicate poverty<\/strong>. If it was, we\u2019d have done it already, many times over.
