A popular metaphor in American  business urges you to think \u201coutside the box.\u201d Folk wisdom advises that  problem-solving is helped by thinking about something \u201con the one hand\u201d  and then \u201con the other hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Is there any psychological truth to such metaphors for better thinking?  Our research suggests that the answer is yes. When people literally \u2014  that is, physically \u2014 embody these metaphors, they generate more  creative ideas for solving problems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/44\/2012\/02\/rodin-thinker-paris-4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3328\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/44\/2012\/02\/rodin-thinker-paris-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"384\"><\/a>Here\u2019s how the authors, Suntae Kim, Evan Polman, and Jeffrey Sanchez-Burks, explain what they mean:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Recent advances in understanding what psychologists call \u201cembodied  cognition\u201d indicate a surprisingly direct link between mind and body. It  turns out that people draw on their bodily experiences in constructing  their social reality. Studies show, for example, that someone holding a  warm cup of coffee tends to perceive a stranger as having a \u201cwarmer\u201d  personality. Likewise when holding something heavy, people see things as  more serious and important \u2014 more \u201cweighty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">However, until recently it was not known whether bodily experiences  could help in generating new ideas and solutions to problems. <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.ilr.cornell.edu\/articles\/486\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Our research<\/a>, which will be published soon in the journal Psychological Science, discovered that it can.<\/p>\n<p>What might be some of the implications of this research?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">By showing that bodily experiences can help create new knowledge, our  results further undermine the strict separation between mind and body \u2014  another box that has confined our thinking for a long time. In addition,  although we\u2019re only starting to grasp how catchphrases shape how people  think, it\u2019s possible to begin prescribing some novel suggestions to  enhance creativity. For instance, if we\u2019re performing a job that  requires some \u201coutside the box\u201d thinking, we may have to avoid working  in cubicles.<\/p>\n<p>This research confirms something I have experienced time and again in my life. When I am grappling with a particularly difficult problem, and especially when I\u2019m trying to be creative, I find great help if I get out of my office and go for a walk. Something about getting out of my \u201cbox\u201d helps me to \u201cthink outside of the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wonder what implications this research might have for organizations that seek to enhance the creativity of their members? I think especially of groups that tend to do their brainstorming in boxy conference rooms.
