Summer is finally in full swing in New York City \u2013 the days are very long, the subways are\u00a0very\u00a0<\/em>warm, and it\u2019s so humid you can feel the moisture settle on your skin when you go outside. (I\u2019ve been seeing fireflies in the parks, too, at night.)<\/p>\n

So a little summer poem seems in order, right?<\/p>\n

Summer at North Farm<\/strong>

Finnish rural life, ca. 1910<\/em><\/p>\n

Fires, always fires after midnight,<\/div>\n
the sun depending in the purple birches<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
and gleaming like a copper kettle.<\/div>\n
By the solstice they\u2019d burned everything,<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
the bad-luck sleigh, a twisted rocker,<\/div>\n
things \u201cpossessed\u201d and not-quite-right.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The bonfire coils and lurches,<\/div>\n
big as a house, and then it settles.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The dancers come, dressed like rainbows<\/div>\n
(if rainbows could be spun),<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
and linking hands they turn<\/div>\n
to the melancholy fiddles.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A red bird spreads its wings now<\/div>\n
