Gideon Strauss is the executive director of the Max De Pree Center for Leadership at Fuller Seminary, and has been my boss twice (first when I worked at Comment<\/a>, and later when I launched Fieldnotes<\/a>). More importantly, he\u2019s been a friend and mentor for a long time, and his family is very dear to my husband and me.<\/p>\n

So it is with some deep gratitude and understanding of how well he knows this territory that I recommend his piece at The High Calling on \u201chow to survive reaching the edge of heartbreak at work<\/a>,\u201d a subject many of us are all too acquainted with:<\/p>\n

The Psalms offer us paradigmatic examples for our subjective human responses of\u00a0wonder<\/em>,heartbreak<\/em>, and\u00a0hope\u00a0<\/em>(that is,\u00a0to God\u2019s great acts of\u00a0creation<\/em>,\u00a0judgment<\/em>, and\u00a0redemption<\/em>)\u00a0and as such show us how \u201cto tap into the larger narrative, the bigger picture and the idea of the whole journey,\u201d as Sooi-Ling suggests.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0statistician\u00a0<\/em>familiar with Psalm 19 can delight in the patterns of big data as part of creation\u2019s song of praise to God. The\u00a0corporate raider\u00a0<\/em>upon her first encounter with Psalm 51 may finally, harrowingly, become aware of the human cost of her plundering. The\u00a0pension fund manager\u00a0<\/em>faced with devastation by a poor set of investment decisions (or simply the hard constraints imposed by a recession), may nonetheless find solace and encouragement in the words of Psalm 23.<\/p>\n
