Though the lines between work and the rest of life have blurred for many, summer is a time for a break, a rest, a sabbatical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-4j18o\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The <em>end <\/em>of summer, however, often brings about new realizations about our relationship with work. For many, the end of summer is the \u201cOh no, my job sucks\u201d season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-31ltj\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">As we spend time away in a new setting, we may return and see our work differently. In this post we ask: \u201cWhat is your vacation telling you about your job?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-8m5rt\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Reflecting on my own vacations, here are four possible answers to that question:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Potential Answers<\/h3>\n<ol class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-ol\">\n<li id=\"viewer-8j9ep\" class=\"roLFQS _2ULPL public-DraftStyleDefault-orderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-reset _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS NSjbv\">\n<p class=\"_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS\"><strong>\u201cNothing\u201d:<\/strong> Sometimes, we learn nothing about our jobs on vacation because we never left our jobs on vacation. A few summers ago, we had a crisis at our firm and I spent the better part of our summer trip working to get out ahead of it. It wasn\u2019t a vacation\u2013I was just working from a different place.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-1selm\" class=\"roLFQS _2ULPL public-DraftStyleDefault-orderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS NSjbv\">\n<p class=\"_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS\"><strong>\u201cYou Can\u2019t Wait to Go Back\u201d: <\/strong>There have been years when I could not wait to get back to work. Right before the trip, I could not wait to get away. But a good vacation\u2013with fun, connection, learning, and rest, gets me to a point of restlessness about getting back to work. I want to return and tackle the next season. Leaving a vacation with this clear enthusiasm is generally a sign I am confidently in the right role and place in terms of my work and career.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-ekhup\" class=\"roLFQS _2ULPL public-DraftStyleDefault-orderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS\">\n<p class=\"_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS\"><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re Not Ready to Go Back\u201d<\/strong>: A third reaction is, \u201cI\u2019m not ready to go back.\u201d There were several causes of this feeling for me. 1) A truncated break. I did not budget enough time away. The root cause: I had failed to engineer enough of a true respite from my daily responsibilities and tasks. The rush back to work was caused by a lack of delegation and planning. 2) An exhausting vacation. For our family this is characterized by spending so much time with others socially. The net result is not enough hours where we felt like we were truly \u201coff.\u201d What\u2019s the job-related message in this reaction? It\u2019s not that I hate my job. It\u2019s that actually did a poor job preparing for and or planning my vacation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-bdvkr\" class=\"roLFQS _2ULPL public-DraftStyleDefault-orderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS NSjbv\">\n<p class=\"_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS\"><strong>\u201cYou Dread Going Back\u201d:<\/strong> A final reaction is dreading going back. Toward the end of vacation, the anxiety rises, the sleep disappears, and the grumpy comes out. This is a tell tale sign that something is off. It doesn\u2019t always mean we need to change jobs or careers, but it is an indicator that something needs to change. <strong>Possibilities include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-ul\">\n<li id=\"viewer-6a7m9\" class=\"roLFQS ULPWlI _3Kjjs public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth2 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-reset _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS NSjbv\">\n<p class=\"_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS\"><strong>The \u201cwhy\u201d that is driving us at work<\/strong>. Is the work a means to an end? Do you work just for the paycheck? Is work your source of self-gratification? Why do you work?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-98pol\" class=\"roLFQS ULPWlI _3Kjjs public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth2 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS NSjbv\">\n<p class=\"_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS\"><strong>The way we approach our work<\/strong>\u2013how we organize it, the relationships we try to manage, and the assignments we agree to. Do you approach it with a mindset of service? Do you think about how your role is a chance for you to solve a problem for someone else?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-470gv\" class=\"roLFQS ULPWlI _3Kjjs public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth2 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS NSjbv\">\n<p class=\"_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS\"><strong>The place we work<\/strong>. Sometimes we need to move on but are afraid to move on.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Wisdom for the Back to Work Blues<\/h3>\n<p id=\"viewer-392t3\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Every September, clients that can\u2019t imagine going back to business as usual after vacation reach out to us for coaching. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-2bk6p\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">With each, we carefully walk through a process to help them closely understand what\u2019s causing their discontent, and their options for action.
