Historic. \u00a0That\u2019s the only word to really describe what happened here in Colonial Williamsburg today. \u00a0As I\u2019ve written before, the Simulated Convention of States has been going on for the past three days,\u00a0as representatives from all fifty states deliberated over ways to bring\u00a0the United States back to its original glory.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how it began this morning:<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nCall me sentimental, but just hearing the roll call gave me chillbumps. \u00a0Some states simply said, \u201chere.\u201d Others bragged about their states in (often) hilarious ways.\u00a0 I loved hearing the variety of\u00a0accents, and the comments that\u00a0ranged from sports bravado to historical gloating. \u00a0(Yes, Connecticut, we get it. \u00a0You\u2019re the \u201cConstitution State.\u201d And Tennessee, we do appreciate your history of volunteer service.)<\/p>\nOf course, this was only a simulated convention\u2026\u00a0more about demonstrating how the process works, than figuring out the precise amendments that would actually be proposed when the real one is inevitably called. The three committees \u2013\u00a0Fiscal Restraint Committee;\u00a0Federal Legislative and Executive Jurisdiction Committee;\u00a0Term Limits and Federal Judicial Jurisdiction Committee \u2014\u00a0worked for hours yesterday to propose amendments germane to the application.<\/p>\nAt the end of the day, we ended up with\u00a0\u00a0six proposed amendments that might lawfully come up\u00a0\u00a0under our COS application:<\/p>\n1. Requiring the states to approve any increase in the national debt<\/strong> \n2. Term limits on Congress<\/strong> \n3. Limiting federal overreach by returning the Commerce Clause to its original meaning <\/strong> \n4. Limiting the power of federal regulations by giving an easy congressional override<\/strong> \n5. Require a super majority for federal taxes and repeal the 16th Amendment <\/strong> \n6. Give the states (by a 3\/5ths vote) the power to abrogate any federal law, regulation or executive order.<\/strong><\/p>\nThe debate from the floor was vigorous. \u00a0Check out Connecticut representative Joe Markley discussing one of the amendments:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HjLPf4ft5NQ\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe> \nAt the end of the day, the Convention delegates proposed amendments with the conviction that they are a sound beginning to a critically-needed national discussion about restoring the balance of power between the federal government and the states.<\/p>\nIt was inspiring to behold. \u00a0America \u2014 it ain\u2019t done
