As it turns out, there are special snowflake students in South Africa who are turning its universities into their personal social justice playgrounds just like they\u2019re doing here in America.<\/p>\n
The latest, and perhaps craziest, idea is getting rid of science\u00a0\u2014 after all, it\u2019s too \u201cWestern\u201d \u2014 and replace it with something more legitimate: like witchcraft.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s exactly what a group of students, who describe themselves as \u201cfallists,\u201d are trying to do at the University of Cape Town. Because science is too Eurocentric, they say, it needs to be \u201cdecolonized\u201d and revamped to something far more African: black magic.<\/p>\n
\u201cScience as a whole is a product of Western modernity, and the whole thing should be scratched off,\u201d one of the students declared in a video posted to YouTube. She suggested science get a \u201crestart from an African perspective:\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFor instance, I have a question for all the science people: There\u2019s a place in KZN called Umhlab-uyalingana, and they believe that through the magic \u2014 the black magic, they call it black magic, they call it witchcraft \u2014 that you are able to send a lightening to attack someone. Can you explain that scientifically, because it\u2019s something that happens!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
A smattering a laughter filled the room as one male student spoke up: \u201cIt\u2019s not true!\u201d<\/p>\n
But the fallists remain undeterred:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to decolonize by having knowledge that is produced by us, that speaks to us, and that is able to accommodate to knowledge from our perspective. So if you\u2019re saying that you disagree with her approach it means that you are vested in the western and Eurocentric way of understanding which means you yourself still need to go back internally. Decolonize your mind.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The logical, or illogical, conclusion to all this is summed up by how they view Sir Isaac Newton\u2019s discovery of gravity: \u201cIt is saying that it was Newton and only Newton who knew or saw of an apple falling and then out of nowhere decided that gravity existed and created an equation, and that is it! \u2026 whether people knew Newton or not, or whether whatever happens in western Africa, northern Africa, the thing is the only way to explain gravity is through Newton.\u201d<\/p>\n
And the only way to explain progressive lunacy is listening to you reject scientific fact in favor of magic.<\/p>\n
