College has become kindergarten and students favor safe spaces and trigger warnings above the free exchange of ideas. And since the election, these snowflakes are melting faster than ever before.<\/p>\n
Rice University, the private college in Houston, Texas, was turned into a healing space in the days after Donald Trump was elected president by about 150 students who gathered to form one huge group hug to comfort one another.<\/p>\n
\u201cRice is and will continue to be a safe place for you,\u201d attendees were promised.<\/p>\n
An organizer shouted to the crowd:<\/p>\n
\u201cYou should be comfortable being yourself on this campus. Your voice is wanted, it is desired. Let\u2019s spend a few moments locking arms, holding hands, and feel like one big family. We are one Rice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
If standing in a giant circle to comfort your hurt feelings over the outcome of the American election process isn\u2019t bad enough, there were plenty of other options from which to choose. From\u00a0The College Fix<\/a>:<\/p>\n
One Rice club event scheduled Saturday aims to \u201cactively brainstorm ideas and create solutions to ensure the safety of our fellow Americans\u201d in the aftermath of the election. Goals for the event include increasing \u201cmutual understanding and empathy\u201d and to \u201cpave a way for a new dawn.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rice Health Advisors, students whose role mainly consists of providing other students with cold medicine and condoms, posted their phone numbers on a Rice Facebook group in case anybody wanted to talk.<\/p>\n
An email sent Wednesday by the Women\u2019s Resource Center said \u201cPlease take care of yourselves in this stressful time. The WRC will be holding a destress hour at 8 pm tonight in the Women\u2019s Resource Center office. Drink water, go for a walk, take some deep breaths.\u201d<\/p>\n
Members of the university\u2019s \u201cQueer and Allies\u201d club received an email alerting them to resources for Rice\u2019s Wellbeing Center and LGBT centers across Houston. The email concluded urging students to \u201cplease use whatever resources you need to process.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
It would seem these young folks didn\u2019t hear the word \u201cno\u201d enough as children, evidenced by the fact that they are still acting like children. Sometimes, circumstances don\u2019t work out in your favor and like the song says; you can\u2019t always get what you want. Unless it\u2019s a safe space. Rice has plenty of those, apparently.<\/p>\n
