On this blog, I\u2019ve repeatedly chronicled the demise of higher learning in America\u2026 a demise that happens to correlate to the rise of political correctness and identity politics.\u00a0 Can you imagine, for example, what our Founding Fathers would say about\u00a0Skyline College administrators\u00a0telling Eric Corgas, president of its Young Americans for Liberty chapter,\u00a0to remove his\u00a0\u201csmall folding table\u201d from which he was handing out\u00a0Constitutions? To add insult to injury, they told him that he also had to\u00a0get a permit before he did\u00a0even did that.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Director of Student Development\u00a0Amory Cariadus\u00a0shamed the group for\u00a0not telling her in enough advance\u00a0they\u2019d be publicly promoting the Constitution:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re okay with you guys doing free speech, but, like, you guys gotta, like, let me know, not just send me an email at, like, 1:00\u201d [she said]. Cariadus then instructed Corgas to complete a copy of Skyline\u2019s \u201cFree Speech Permit.\u201d Cariadus told the students that \u201cit probably, if [they] were, like, not disruptive, it wouldn\u2019t be an issue\u201d if they did not fill out the permit. However, she later said that the school receives complaints about free speech all the time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the College Fix<\/em><\/a>, \u201cSince then, the YAL president has notified Cariadus of his campus activism ahead of time, but he has refused her demand to fill out a \u201cfree speech permit.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education<\/em>\u00a0thankfully sent a letter of warning to the institution, explaining that their demands \u201cexplicitly violates the district\u2019s policy, which says its campuses cannot stop expressive activity \u2018solely because\u2019 the expressive group doesn\u2019t get permission. Skyline is also violating district policy by designating its campus a \u2018non-public forum\u2019 except for its free-speech zones, FIRE attorney\u00a0Brynne Madway told Skyline President\u00a0Regina Stanback Stroud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, the college relented and tossed its policies against\u00a0free speech.<\/p>\n

FIRE said Friday<\/a>\u00a0the community college acted quickly to change its policies after being warned, rescinding the permit requirement and publicly clarifying that \u201cstudents can engage in expressive activity outside of the school\u2019s free speech areas.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s a great way to start the year.<\/p>\n
