Colliding stars reveal their gravitational wave secrets<\/span><\/p>\n

Australian scientists have announced an \u201cunparalleled\u201d astrophysical discovery revealing that they have detected gravitational waves from the death spiral of two neutron stars.<\/span><\/p>\n

Less than a month after three US professors were awarded the\u00a0Nobel Prize in Physics<\/a>\u00a0for the 2015 discovery of gravitational waves, a team of Australian astrophysicists, including Swinburne researchers, have announced a new international discovery.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the first time a cosmic event has been observed and measured in both light and gravitational waves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Swinburne hosts the $31.3 million Australian Research Council\u2019s Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery\u00a0(OzGrav)<\/a>\u00a0which was established last year to capitalise on the original discovery of gravitational waves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Swinburne\u2019s\u00a0Professor Matthew Bailes<\/a>, Director of OzGrav, says the new discovery has enabled scientists to pinpoint the origin of gravitational waves and to actually see \u201cthe colossal event\u201d that accompanied the gravitational waves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis was the first time that any cosmic event was observed through both the light it emitted and the gravitational ripples it caused in the fabric of space and time,\u201d Professor Bailes says.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe subsequent avalanche of science was virtually unparalleled in modern astrophysics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

OzGrav is a collaboration between six universities in Australia \u2013 Swinburne University of Technology, Australian National University, the University of Western Australia, Monash University, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Adelaide.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
