Am reading chapter 7 and have a question with regard to subsection entitled \u201cPride Envy and Deceit\u201d.When supporting the needy\u00a0 how does one\u00a0 discern between those who can but don\u2019t and those who can\u2019t because they can\u2019t other than destitute children?<\/p>\n

My general counsel is \u201cDon\u2019t worry about it.\u201d\u00a0 If it\u2019s a charity that seems like a scam (such as a phone call that seems sketchy), you can generally check on line with something like www.CharityNavigator.org<\/a> to see if they are legit.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a person, I just give and let God worry about it.\u00a0 It\u2019s better to be cheated than be stingy.\u00a0 Dorothy Day said, \u201cThe gospel takes away forever the right to distinguish between the deserving and undeserving poor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul\u2019s advice to the Thessalonians about how, \u201cIf a man will not work, he shall not eat\u201d is counsel given *within* the household of faith.\u00a0 He\u2019s telling *Christians* to get off their duffs and not wait around for the Second Coming.<\/p>\n

But Jesus\u2019 counsel regarding giving to those outside<\/em> the household of faith is radical: \u201cGive to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. (Lk 6:30).<\/p>\n

He puts no conditions at all on our giving.\u00a0 Give to him who asks. Period. What if you are cheated?\u00a0 You\u2019ll live.\u00a0 It\u2019s more important to be generous.<\/p>\n

Obviously that doesn\u2019t mean we should be fools.\u00a0 So if its obviously a scam, point that out to the thief\u2013for his soul\u2019s sake that he might repent.\u00a0 But don\u2019t sweat<\/em> about being cheated.\u00a0 Don\u2019t live in fear.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let it control you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
